Section B HOOTS NEW BOARD— The Shep ard-Pruden Memorial Library serves Chowan County and in accordance with the state law has a board of trustees ap pointed by the county com missioners. The late and be loved Marion Downum served faithfully on the local library board as well as the Petti grew Regional Library board and it was necessary to ap point a replacement for her position. Mrs. J. N. Slade, wife of an Edenton physician, received a four-year appoint ment from the county com missioners and was subse quently elected by the local board to the vacancy on the regional board. In order to provide a full complement of six trustees, the commissioners made the following appointments: Mrs. Marguerite Burch for a period of four years and Mrs. Eliza Elliott and Mrs. Carolyn Mc- Mullan for a period of two years. Reappointed for six year terms were the incum bent local and regional trus tees, Mrs. Lina Mack and Tom H. Shepard. Each trustee has been provided with a hand book of duties prepared by the Institute of Government and we know they will con scientiously perform those duties. Congratulations, one and all SCREECHES FILMS FOR SCHOOLS—In the past, the Adult Film Ser vice of the N. C. State Library has been restricted to the use of certain groups. Now that restriction , has been lifted and the policy ! of the State Library has been . broadened to make their film library available to public as well as private school teach ers. It has been increasingly difficult to book specific films because of the great demand on the small supply available and this will be intensified by this new concept of service. 'Don’t misunderstand me— I’m all for this increased usage of a very valuable re source, but I wish to prepare the users for possible frustra tion until the film library in Raleigh has had a chance to work out their new system. Since all films are mailed, co operation by every user is essential to smooth booking. A delay by one user could mean real disappointment to the next requester on the list. Sears Manager issues Warning A warning to customers who have purchased a belt massager which is potentially unsafe was issued today by- Jim Phillips, manager of Sears, Roebuck and Company’s Edenton store. He identified the model as a multi-speed belt massager with a push button lighted switch. It can be further identified by a 449,29110 mo del number on a plate located on the underside of the motor housing. Approximately 11,000 units of this model were sold be tween December, 1909, and October 4, when the merchan dise was taken off sale. Phillips said that tests in dicate the possibility that some of these belt massagers represent a potentially"' dang erous electrical shock hazard. In certain units, serious shock may result if someone touches the massager while touching a water pipe, radiator, faucet or other ground connection. He emphasized that the mo del with a lighted switch is the only one being recalled and that there is no problem with any other model of mas sager. He urged customers who have purchased a massager since 1969 to unplug the unit, verify its model number and to notify the nearest Scars store if the unit has the 449,29110 model number. He said the unit should not be reconnected until it has been inspected and modified. Sears will service the unit in a cus tomer’s home without charge. He also said the massager was sold both in the catalog and in retail stores. Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, October 26, 1972. School Bus Operation Is Big In Chowan System Many of you have asked from time to time about why some school busses ■ are or ange and others yellow, how our busses are routed, and other questions 'related to transportation of pupils. The purpose of this column is to provide you with an over view of our transportation program and hopefully, by doing sd, answer your ques tions about school transporta tion. As you know getting our stu dents to school these days is not as simple as telling them to be ready when the bus ar rives and then driving them to the school door. I t’s a complicated business and one that requires knowledge of laws, bus mechanics and en gineering, and human psych ology among other things. The person in the Edent.on- Chowan Schools who is re sponsible for staying abreast of the latest developments in transportation and at the same time, insuring maxi mum efficiency of bus opera tion is Marvin Hobbs. A prime example of the laws Mr. Hobbs must be knowledgeable about is the current move to have all the nation’s school busses painted national school bus yellow. Required under Highway Safety Program Standards, the law authorizing this change became effective June 5, 1972. This legislation came about as a result of safety studies which ascertained that busses painted yellow were more visible under adverse weather conditions. At present four of the 35 school busses in the Edenton . Chowan School System have been painted this color. Others will be converted from or ange to yellow next summer. During the summer months as well as school year each bus must be thoroughly check ed out to insure that it is in top running condition. Mr. Hobbs’ efforts at keeping our busses in tip top condition have made oui school bus transportation program a most economically efficient one. Another factor involved in the operation of a school transportation system is the strategic planning of bus routes. This involves timing »of routes, determining length of routes, number of stops and the number of passeng ers. An average of 1,823 pu pils in the Edenton - Chowan Schools ride school busses each day. The average round trip route is 28.1 miles. The massiveness in scope of trans portation requires very care ful analysis and study each year. Busses in the Edenton- Chowan Schools are driven by student bus drivers. We are fortunate to have extremely capable and conscientious drivers. Because of the good safety record that has been maintained over the years by our drivers and other teen- Continued on Page 4 if r$ tliaUi Section B CALL ME! Bob Weintraub 11 _ B Motor nOKG corp.
