groups that routine smallpox
vaccination of children be
discontinued in the United
States.
According to Dr. J. N.
Mac Cormack, chief of the
Communicable Disease Control
Section of the State Board of
Health, the move was based on
statistics which show a rapid
decline on the world-wide
incidence of smallpox. There
has not been a case of smallpox
reported in North Carolina
since 1948. The public health
official pointed out that the risk
of dying from smallpox in this
country is far less than that of
dying from vaccine
complications.
Dr. Mac Cormack cautioned,
however, that persons
traveling to countries where
smallpox still exists will be
required to take a smallpox
vaccination.

ANTIQUE SHOW AND SALE SCENES —Pictured above are three of the some 20 antique dealers from in
and out of state that participated in the tvvo-dav Antique Show and Sale held in the National Guard Armory
last week. Above, left. John Long of Merry Oak Antiques in Mineral. Va., is shown holding an 18th Cen
tury lamp fueled by tallow or similar material. The hook enabled the owner to hang the lamp on wall hooks,
chair backs, etc. Above, right, Donna Brewer, a Virginia Beach resident, discusses a rare Victorian high
chair that converts into a rocker from amid her collection of fine antique glassware, and below, left. Miriam
Owen of Miriam’s Antiques, Tarboro. is pictured seated in an arm chair from the 1700 s while holding an an
tique day or night telescope signed “Holland of London.”
Antique Show-Sale Is Termed Successful
By FLYNN SURRATT
“Well, we heard about the
antique show at home, so we
decided to drive down from New
Jersey to see it.” remarked a
passing out-of-state visitor
Saturday morning at the Second
Annual Antique Show and Sale.
Throughout the two-day event
it seemed that visitors to the
area out numbered area
residents. Many took advantage
of the opportunity to view the
historic sites as well, despite the
rather cloudy skies and general
gloom. I
Sponsored by Historic
Edenton and tile Edenton
Jaycees. the show and sale was
of benefit not only to collectors
but to the dealers too. Items as
well as knowledge were
exhanged. and I learned of the
tender loving care to the pieces
regardless of whether they be
big or small

Most people want both parts of
