He will continue his work as a pipefitter in the Virginia Shipyard. Mills entered the school in September, 1969, after graduating from John A. Holmes High School. During its 53 years of operation, the Newport News Shipyard’s Apprentice School has graduated more than 3,700 skilled workmen in 28 crafts. Vocational training and academic instruction equivalent to a junior college education are provided during the four and five-year courses offered by the school. The program also includes athletics and other extracurricular activities. The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company is the world’s largest and most fully integrated Shipyard. Among its most famous products are the United States, Forrestal, Enterprise, and John F. Kennedy. Mr. Edwards Dies In Hospital Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Arthur James Edwards, 107 Jackson Street. The services were held in Williford Memorial Chapel with Rev. E. C. Alexander and Rev. Preston Cay ton officiating. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Mr. Edwards, 69, died Thursday in N. C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill following an extended illness. He was a retired textile worker. A native of Washington County, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Anna Ainsley Edwards. He was married to Mrs. Mary Jordan Edwards who survives. Also surviving is a son, James Robert Edwards of Mobile, Ala.; a daughter, Mrs. Jeannette Edwards Kube of Chesapeake, VaV; a brother, Edward Edwards of Columbia; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ambrose of Edento'n; and five grandchildren. Jle was a member of First Christian Church. Bertie Academy Homecoming Set On October 13, Bertie Academy will host its fifth annual homecoming. Preparations for the homecoming game will begin on Friday. A pep rally honoring the football team will be held at 1:15 P.M. followed by a Powderpuff Football game at 2 o’clock. The Powderpuff Football game will be between the Freshman- Sophomore girls and the Junior- Senior girls. On Saturday at 2 P.M. the Bertie Academy Warriors will face the Albemarle Academy Colts. During halftime, the 1974 Homecoming Queen will be crowned by the 1973 Queen, Miss Kathy Bass. State Fair, one of the nation’s largest agricultural, industrial and educational expositions, will-open here this Friday and run through October 20. Highlighting this year’s fair, which annually draws over half a million visitors from all parts of North Carolina and numerous other states, will be a prograim of free entertainment in Dortcm Arena. For the first time ever, major attractions, such as Ricky Nelson, Danny Davis and tho Nashville Brass and the Earl Scruggs Review, will be available for fairgoers to enjoy free of charge. Elsewhere on the grounds, some 3,000 Tar Heels will display over 11,000 exhibits ranging from pumpkins to cattle to hand-crafted wares. And as always, children of all ages will thrill to the excitement of rides and shows provided by the James E. Strates Shows on the midway, and activities in the grandstand. Opening Day ceremonies will be dedicated to a joint project of fair management and the Sudan Temple Shriners which will allow crippled children and their families to gain free admission to the fair. An appearance by Gov. James Holshouser is scheduled along with music and monkeyshines by Shrine uniformed units.
