Williams of the Edenton Police Department recently praised the Eden ton Sea Explorers for efforts to raise funds through the community-wide sale of first aid kits. He is shown re ceiving a kit from Rusty Barath of the unit, (Photo by Gris Bond). Seo Explorers Conducting Drive The Edenton Sea Explorers are conducting a house-to-house drive this week selling first aid kits, made by Johnson & Johnson. According to Rev. E. L. Earnhardt, every four seconds someone is injured in or around the home. By purchasing a kit, a home or car owner can “be prepared for accidents” by h.-ving on hand an assortment of first aid products, designed to meet minor emergencies' The proceeds from the sale will go to rebuilding of a boat for the Sea Explorers. This fund raising drive will give everyone an opportunity to buy a good supply of a product that no home can afford to be without and at the same time help a worthy cause. “Anybody who tells you he never made a mistake is probably relying on a mighty * poor memory— his or yours.” CHROME REFLECTOR PANS. . . . fmake.your electric range look and cook like NEW! . . . with REFLWPANS s n & Add Now "Sparkl«s" to Your ElocMc Range With Chromo Rofloctor Pont V -}* ',*’• • -v V- Sir ;s.- - ' 5 3 , -jflif' M V' : V <ifr’ \j .'■* . Letter To The Editor Os The Chowan Herald Dear Sir: The newt that I had dreaded hearing caine this morning when I read to The Herald that Mrs. Louise Byrum had passed away. It was, perhaps, selfish of mo to want to hold onto the. last remnants of a life so raveged by the toll of prolonged illness. Vat, how do you say goodbye to a saint of a woman? With flowers? Words of sympathy? A gift to some charity? Maybe. .But it is ironical that when thinking of what I should do for Miss Louise, all that comes to mind is what she did fro me. In 1970 while stationed in Vietnam, I sent a Christmas letter home to my family in which I related the terrible confusion and anguish and frustration 1 felt in being a part of the forces, both American ' and otherwise, that were tearing apart the heart of that country and of that country’s people. Although that letter was intended only for my family, it was subsequently published to The Chowan Herald, where it was read by Miss Louise . She sent me the most inspirational letter I have ever received in which she expressed feelings similar to mine, and she told me that my letter had given her the courage to write the President a personal letter expressing these feelings. She said that she had previously considered writing such a letter but that she had felt that one voice would not mean anything. But realizing the effect that a single letter from one soldier had had on her, she decided to write the President anyway. Ultimately, the effect of hundred of thousand of letters such as hers to Congress and our national leaders did indeed hasten the end of that war. I cannot describe the impact that this letter from Miss Louise and bar subsequent letters had on nta and continue to have on me. to know that one small open expression of my own conscience could have such an effect upon the actions of someone else has given me the courage to speak out on matters form* RosidMt li Who’s Who Lynn Davenport, Jr., a junior at Great Bridge High School was recently notified that he is to be featured in the Eighth Annual Edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 1973-74, the largest student award publication in the nation.
