This two-day break in the Calendar year schedule was brought about by the 10 month employment of teachers enacted by the General Assembly. While it might Be a break for students, it certainly could not be looked upon as one for teachers and other school personnel. The purpose of this week’s column is to set forth what teachers will be doing on those two days. It has been written that, “To become a teacher is not only to commit yourself to your students, it is also a committment to yourself to be a continuing learner.” With this philosophy in mind, several school systems in Region “R”, Edenton-Chowan Schools being one of them, have designated Monday, March 4, as a staff development day for education. On this day all teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, will assemble at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City. At this time, teachers from different schools and school systems will be afforded the opportunity to: (1) exchange ideas and discuss mutual concerns, and (2) participate in workshop activities desired to strengthen their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Over 45 different workshops will be offered on that day, each three hours in length. Several of the workshops deal with reading instruction. Some of the reading areas of study include: diagnosis of reading problems; word recognition skills; comprehension and study skills; and creative use of textbooks in teaching reading. Similar variety will be available to teachers in other areas such as mathematics teaching basic math operations; and social studies - topics for selection in this area include, teaching legal concepts; youth and the law; anthropology, sociology, and American political behavior. Science is and has been a big area for concentration with workshops on elementary science, biology, as well as chemistry and physics. Workshops will also be available for music and art teaches, librarians, physical education and occupational teachers. ' t Page 5-C opportunity for those who teach your children or grandchildren to continue to keep abreast of subject matter' and methodology in various subject matter areas. On March 5 an opportunity will be afforded for parents to come to school and meet with their child's teacher. This day has been set aside on the school cllendar for parental conferences. Teachers will be available, all day, to confer with parents about the progress of their child in school. Hopefully, many of you will avail yourself of the opportunity to visit your child’s teacher or teachers, and learn first hand of his strengths and weaknesses, and what you as a parent working with the teacher, can do to improve his weaknesses while capitalizing on his strenghts. Your school board feels strongly that these two days are equally as important as those in which your child attends school. For as rapidly as changes are taking place an knowledge about what and how to teach becomes outdated, school personnel have an obligation to continue learning. In like manner, nothing can replace dialogue or communication between home and school. We look forward to seeing you March 5. BRING NEW LIFE TO YOUR CARPETING Revive the original beauty of your rugs.
