Thursday, September 12, 1974 ■:waa: " Grant Awarded For Establishing Regional Center The N. C. Drag Authority has awarded a grant in the amount of $130,000 annually to the’ Division of Mental Health Services for the purpose of establishing a Drug Rehabilitation Center. The Division of Mental Health Services in turn has made these funds available to the Eastern Mental Health Regional office to establish a Region-wide (32 counties) Rehabilitation Center for drug abusers. In March, 1974, Dr. Robert R. Ratcliffe, Eastern regional director, designated the Regional Alcoholism Porgram Director, Wade H. Williams, Jr„ as project director to explore the need and feasibility for the development of such a facility in Eastern North Carolina. J. H. Waldrop was brought in as a consultant "to make every effort,” in the words of Williams, “to locate a suitable place for the implementation of this project.” It was after an exhaustive search throughout the 32-county Eastern Mental Health Region that the most appropriate locality for such services was the Wilmington Area. As a result of much planning. the Eastern Region has sub-contracted with the Southeastern Mental development and im plementation of such a Drug implementation of such a Drug Rehabilitation Center and services under direction of Dr. Burt Walden, area director. In commenting on the rehabilitation center. Dr. Walden said. “I feel that this program can and will be a major resource for the people of Eastern North Carolina who are involved in Chemical substance abuse as well as their families ; and society as a whole." j' He added, “From time-to time in the immediate future, we plan to provide information concerning this Rehabilitation Center in order to keep the Eastern Region apprised as to how. the facility can be used for the benefit of our people.” Jim Lang, Southeastern Mental Health Center’s Coordinator of Professional Services, and Fritz Fern, rehabilitation center director, are completeing the initial planning for the project which is expected to open in the early fall. Too, Waldrop will continue to serve as the liaison between the 13 Mental Health Centers in the Eastern Region and the rehabilitation center. Waldrop points out that admission to the “therapeutic camping facility" will be through the 13 Eastern Mental Health Centers. RECEIVES DEGREE COLUMBUS, Ohio-Bobby Scot Ober, Route 1, Edenton, N.
