4 Sheriff Troy Toppin this
•week released the following
information regarding
f«:ent activity which
indicates increased interest
on the part of citizens in
assisting law enforcement
officers:
On Thursday, Sheriff
Julian Broughtan of the
Perquimans County
Sheriff’s Department
Received valuable
information from an
r : informant that a certain
subject had been in Hertford
and had stolen a checkbook.
Same had forged some of
the checks and tried to cash
.them at one of the Hertford
banks, but was refused. The
informant then advised
Sheriff Broughtan that the
subject would be coming to
.Edenton to try and cash
* these checks. At that time
Sheriff Broughtan called me
and gave me the
information on the checks
and had me to be on the
lookout for same,
m
At approximately 1:45
P.M. I received another call
that the three subjects had
left Hertford. I was given a
description of them, the car
they were driving, and the
bank they’d be going to. I
then contacted Edenton
Police Department, gave
them the information, and
.had. them send an officer to
Y.Northside Shopping Center
to watch for the car. Officer
F. M. Parker was assigned.
Officer Sonny Jones and I
parked a block away from
: the bank. At 2:10 P.M.
'it dtficer Parker reported the
*: car had passed Northside
and that he was keeping it
; : under serveillance. It came
■jjjF: within sight of us (Jones and
. myself) and parked in the
: parking lot next to the bank.
:Two subjects got out of the
' car and went over to the
' bank; however, the bank
had not re-opened at that
lime, so both subjects went
back across the street from
ihe bank and talked for
approximately 15 minutes.
•». The. two subjects then
.. went back to the car, got h);
and left headed north out of
Edenton. At that time, the
Police and I stopped the
vehicle and found the stolen
checks in possession of one
>f the subjects.
An arrest was made, due
