HE CHOWAN HERALD Thursday, July 9, 1981 Work And The Famly By Theresa R. Ford } Assoc. Home Ec. Ext. Agent Work and the family When mother begins employment outside the tome, instead of changing tiles, she simply adds an idditional one. Im •lementation of a “dual role or women” just isn’t wssible when both roles are i uU-time jobs. You can’t add i 40-hour work week to nother’s schedule and expect past performance evels on all things. Sometimes mother’s extra income can be used to lire some jobs done. But, if ler main purpose in vorking is to add to the amily income, little if any noney may be available to lire help. So mother tries to lo both jobs. The ‘ round-the :lock battle to carry out each role often leaves her ihysically worn out and nentally depressed. It’s at his point that guilt feelings iegin and the “I’m -a • ailure” complex emerges. The solution to the iroblem is highly in lividual. It’s something each family must work out or itself. There’s no mi versa 1 “right” answer, tome families may find success in dealing with the eroblem by discarding their lotions of “woman’s work” ind “man’s work” and simply viewing jobs as jobs o be done. “Mother has always done t” or “father has always lone it” really aren’t valid ‘easons for those in iividuals continuing to do vbat they’ve done in the ' eat. A shuffling - or trading of responsibilities is often wcessary. But there’s no >rescribed “best” way. The children may benefit vhen their mother is hap >ily employed. As the juantity of time the mother spends with her family iecreases, the quality-or low the time is used - may ncrease as she strives to compensate for her absence luring the day. Realizing hat family time is more imited, the working mother iften makes a special effort or the family when she is tome. She may cook ather his favorite meal. She nay set aside a special time or each child. Family xitings are planned. As a ■esult, the employed mother nay be involved in more ictivities with her children ban a mother who is al ways home. Research shows that :hildren of employed nothers may be more self ■eliant or responsible as hey accept-partly through iecessity--more serious wusehold tasks than their peers whose mothers stay lome. Daughters of em ployed mothers appear to be nore work-oriented than hose whose mothers are not Mid employees. Working mothers who ireviously had a “tied lown” feeling often are lappier with combining Nitside employment with heir maternal role. When employed, these mothers nay be less nervous or rritated by their children.
