Jlette t So ‘The SZditot To The Editor: I am a student at Governor’s School East in Laurinburg, and I would like to explain what Governor’s School is. Before I left for the six-week session a few people asked me what exactly is Governor’s School. Governor’s School is often mistaken to be a preparatory school for aspiring politicians. Nothing could be further from the truth. Governor’s school is a summer program for gifted and talented students. There are eleven different areas of study offered at Governor’s school. These areas are: Art, Drama, French, Natural Sciences, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Social Sciences, Dance, English, Mathematics, and Spanish. The student signs up for the area of his choice and meets with this class twice a day, There are also two other classes students are required to attend. They are general conceptual development and Philosophy and self and society. The purpose of general conceptual development and Philosophy is to en courage the student to question the standard ideas of society while self and society helps the student define values and establish goals. The main idea behind Governor’s school to help students to become motivated in using their full potential in every aspect of thieir life. Sincerely, . Harriet B.
