Phillip S. Brown of Southern Pines. Brown, who is also director of the Bishop Penick Home in Southern Pines, says the coalition will continue to provide spiritual counseling to older adults, along with the reasssurance that they are need ed and wanted. He says the organization will also continue to provide services many elderly citizens must receive to continue to live at home with both dignity and pride. Assistant Secretary for the Divi sion of Aging of the North Carolina Department of Human Resources Elaine Stoops says some churches and synagogues are now providing facilities for meal sites, senior centers, and health clinics. Members of the congegations are also serving as volunteers in programs that assist nursing home and rest home residents, according to Stoops. The Division of Aging is cooperating with the coalition by offering technical assistance to coordinate local aging programs and community resources, and by publicizing and providing staff for workshops. The division is also of fering church and synagogue leaders training opportunities through educational programs that benefit older citizens. The Interfaith Coalition on Ag ing extends an invitation to all churches and synagogues to par ticipate in this project. Interested persons or groups should contact the Rev. Phillip S. Any dog found running loose without a current rabies tag will be picked up and taken to the pound. Hence if your dog disap pears, we urge that you promptly call the animal control office at (919) 482-4366. Don’t wait until visiting hours at the shelter to learn whether your pet has been picked up. Call and describe your dog to assure that it will be held until you can collect it from the shelter. If your dog does not have a cur rent rabies tag, we advise that you take it to a veterinarian for shots as soon as possible and in the meantime keep the animal tied up. Remember that you must pay a fee to recover your animal from the shelter, and that money would be better spent on rabies shots. The Edenton-Chowan SPCA is presently looking into the pos sibility of sponsoring a rabies clinic in mid-May at which time you may readily obtain shots for your pets if you have not already done so. Next week we will an nounce the time and place as plans progress. As we mentioned in last week’s article, puppy season is upon us at the shelter. In a population of 39 dogs, at least 20 are puppies from three or more litters. They are all mixed breed and of various sizes and colors. One chihuahua pup re mains from a small litter. There are also a number of grown or half-grown dogs worthy of adoption. Two adult elkhounds, one male and one female both wearing collars, were found on Mexico Road. These may be pets that have strayed from home. There is also a fine looking young female black lab wearing an Alabama license; she was picked up near the Chowan Country Club. Anyone missing a dog or dogs of these descriptions, please call animal control at (919) 482-4366. If you visit the shelter this Saturday or next Tuesday you may see a fine adult male black lab, a young female part beagle and a small female resembling a Gordon setter. Renwick, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC and director of the Office of Student Counseling, event sponsor. “I’d like to think that this type of program will instill a lot of pride in minority students and will encourage them to reach higher academic success.” Students from Chowan County who were recognized were Sherri Denise Belfield and Patricia Ann Halsey, both of Edenton. Vets' Queries Are Answered Q—I am planning to buy a new home in the $150,000 to $175,000 range. I understand that the VA limits the amount that can be bor rowed. Is this true? A—The VA has no limit on the loan amount it will guarantee, ex cept that the loan cannot exceed the VA appraised value. The lender determines the loan amount based on the lender’s guidelines for VA loans and the financial status and credit wor thiness of the veteran. Most VA lenders will require a downpay ment on loans that exceed $110,000. Q—I have an indebtedness to the VA due to a home loan default in 1978. Can I still apply for a wavier of this order? A—Yes. There is no time limit for wavier requests on home loan debts.
