Box 1 W • Nr:i«s Head, NC 27‘>59 Park Celebrates Heritage Week Pettigrew State Park will once again celebrate Indian Heritage Week Friday, Saturday and Sun day, September 25,26 and 27. On display will be Lake Phelps’ In dian artifact collection which will include pottery, gorgets and pro jectile points. Three of Pettigrew’s Indian dugouts will be exhibited. It has been recently discovered that Lake Phelps owns the longest canoe in the south at 37’ 5” and another canoe that is the second oldest in the nation at 4,370 years old. These two canoes have not been recovered and therefore, will not be on display. Exhibits will open each day from 9:30 a.m. un til 5 p.m. The park staff will be lecturing each day on the Indian lifestyle and their environment. Skins of animals past and present will be shown. On Friday, September 25, Leslie Bright from the Underwater Ar chaeology Unit of the Division of Archives and History will be the guest speaker. Bright has par ticipated in most underwater ar chaeology projects in North Carolina, including the Monitor discovery, Ram Neuse, and Lake Phelps’ canoes. Becky Marty, the East District Naturalist for the Division of Parks and Recreation will be pre sent. Miss Marty, along with the park staff, will be interpreting the environment during the Indian occupation. On Saturday, David Cook, Park Ranger at Falls Lake Recreation Area, will be demonstrating pro jectile point construction and how to use an atlatl or throwing stick. Paris Trail of Edenton will be demonstrating how to bum out a dugout canoe. Dr. David Phelps, professor of archaeology at East Carolina University, will be present to answer questions. He is con sidered by many to be the best authority on the Indians of eastern North Carolina. Collectors are in vited to bring their artifacts for Openings Reported The Edenton Employment Security Commission found jobs for 103 workers in August, with 133 openings reported by employers. Of that number, four individuals were placed in positions with salaries above $15,000 annually. The local ESC office has had 218 job openings reported since its fiscal year began July 1 and fill ed 178 openings with 171 workers (some placed in more than one job). Across the state 18,308 workers were placed through 78 Job Ser vice Centers in six branch offices operated by ESC last month. Employers listed 35,808 open ings with the agency during August and 24,031 of those open ings were filled. NEED AN AIRLINE TICKET? Baker was born December 27, 1824, and his wife was born January 6, 1842. Fran Ward, home economics extension agent; Mrs. Ruby Jernigan, EHA Council President; and Margie Harrell, county EHA Foods and Nutrition Chairman, are coordinating the event. Mrs. Pat Storie, N.C. Heart Association representative, has facilitated the Chowan County celebration. Chowan County shoppers are encouraged to stop by one of the store exhibits and receive infor mation about low-fat foods and meal preparation.
