COUNCILMAN FUST WARD TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 BUSINESSMAN — DEDICATED EXPERIENCED Your Vote and Support Will Be Greatly Appreciated __Paid F<*r By Hollowed For Rooloction Committot Pig Picking Is Scheduled During these last two weeks of October, American Cancer Socie ty volunteers will bring some good news to women of Edenton as part of the Society’s 1987 residential education and fund-raising crusade. Breast cancer, one of the most feared diseases among women, can be one of the easiest cancers to cure if it’s found early. The good news is that there is a tool to detect breast cancer when it is too small to be felt. This is made possible by mammography. Mammography is the use of a low-dose x-ray to detect minute changes in breast cancer tissue. A mammogram can single out a malignant tumor years before it becomes large enough to be felt by even the most experienced physician. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Parker, co chairman of the residential crusade, said the purpose of this year’s crusade is to inform as many residents of Edenton as possible about cancer prevention, early detection and early treat ment, as well as the Society’s many service and rehabilitation programs. As part of the campaign, more than 120 trained volunteers will distribute a folder called, “Now, breast cancer has virtually nowhere to hide’’ to local residents. The folder includes the ASC recommendations for early detection of breast cancer in women without symptoms: • Breast self-examination: This procedure should be practiced every month by women 20 and over; • Examination by physican: For women 20 to 40, examination of the breasts by a physician should take place every three years. For women over 40, this exam should take place annually; • Mammography: Women be tween 35 and 39 should have one baseline mammogram, for future 1 comparisons. Women between 40 and 49 should have this test every one or two years as recommended by their physicians. Women 50 and over should have a mam mogram annually. Students show that early detec tion of breast cancer through mammography can not only bet ter one’s chances of survival, it also can result in less extensive surgery for the patient. The door-to-door distribution of the folder is only one of the many activities planned by American Cancer Society volunteers. The business drive under the chair manship of Mrs. Sarah White is already under way. Other special events include the annual pig pickin’ and auction to be held Sunday, November 1, at Edenton Tractor and Implement Company. Tickets can be obtain ed by calling the local Society’s of fice at 482-8764, or by calling the chairmen of this event, Mr. Jim mie Parrish at 482-3865 or Mr. George Jones at 482-3986. Bachman rn Broker Al TOO* Doing The Buyer’s Homework! When it's time to sell your home, you may consider selling on your own, without the help of a real estate agent. If so, there’s some "home"work you’ll probably need to do for your buyers. Why? Because, one of the first questions buyers ask a real estate agent is "How much cash do I need to purchase this home?", and "How much will my monthly payments be?” Since selling your home by yourself won't eliminate the buyers' questions, here are some tips to help prepare you for the answers. The cash re quirements to purchase your home will depend on the type financing chosen by the buyers. For example, if financing is available on 75% of the purchase price, the down payment would be 25%. Also, other cash would be required for attorney’s fees, credit reports, appraisal fees, etc., as well as any other “up-front” charges by the lender. The monthly payment would de pend on the amount borrowed, the in terest rate, and the term of the loan. This figure can be found by using an amortization book. In addition to the monthly payment for principal and in terest, add additional amounts for taxes and insurance. Actually, it is possible to itemize all of the buyers’ expenses and the mon thly payment - to the penny. With a simple phone call to me, I'll be happy to explain further. If you're planning to sell your home soon and would like information on its current value, give us a call at 482-7484 or come by our office located at 431 South Broad Street. L Come to after the amnuEMMiE production this Saturday evening. We wNI serve dinner until 11 . and beverages until 12! .
