Local Talent Is Judged BylttEKESAT.CLARK >■, Creativity and originalHy is what the judges looked for in the talent participants at the Chowan r^inty 4-H Regional Talent Show. The show was sponsored by the Chowan County Agricultural Ex tension Service. Three nights of entertainment was what the youth from Chowan and surrounding counties provided fair goers on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Placing on Tuesday ragrn were Robin Jo Uchtenwalner, first place; Page Alston, second place; and third place, Stephanie Waff. Donna Howell, Pam Miller, and Ruth Mitchener also par ticipated as contestants. Thurs day night’s show opened up with a performance from Gates Coun ty’s Holly Byars who placed first, second place went to Jamie Monds and Jessie and Lafayette Holley placed third. Other par ticipants were Kendra Bunch, Kim Moye, Lynn Jordan, Shawn Rollins, Raymond Stewart, and Jermaine Brooks. On Friday night, the top three participants from Tuesday and Thursday night shows were given the opportunity to “do their thing” once again to compete for the Finals and the results were as follows: Page Alston, first place; —irrT7T^tTTTTTTTTUTTf7TTfnft^Tfflff7j Robin Jo Li^btenwalner, second place; and Ha$y Byars, third place. , Mr. George Stokes served as 3 Master of Ceremonies and the judges were: Tuesday night: Tammy Smith, Rosemary Lewis, and Bruce Wackelin. Thursday night: Anna ’Hoskins, Stan Winslow, and LuAnn Winslow. Friday night: Doris Anthony, Darlene Lowther, and Lea Lamb. Fish Fry Set The Rocky Hock Ruritan Club will sponsor a benefit fish fry on Saturday, October 24 for Melvin Bunch. The fish fry will be held at the Rocky Hock Community Center and serving times will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Bunch was hospitalized for several weeks and will be out of work for several more weeks to recuperate. The Ruritan Club urges the sup port of the entire community to help with this cause. Tickets for the fish fry are $3.50 each and may be purchased from any Ruritan Club members or may be purchased at the fish fry. Both are probably first-time fairgoers. __ Jones Wins First Place When the Chowan County Fair comes to town, the lights come on and the excitement of participa tion and the aroma of food fills the air. 4-H’er from Chowan, Bertie, and Camden counties contributed to this air of excitement when they rolled in their BBQ grills and demonstrated their cullinary skills on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at the Outdoor Cooking Con test sponsored by the Chowan County Agriculture Extension Service. There were three divisions to the outdoor cooking contest, pork, beef and chicken. The top three contestants in each division was awarded cash prizes. Celena Jones placed first with her “New Generation Pork Chops”; Allen Swanner, second; and Keisna Jackson, third. Four youth participated in the Beef Division: Lynn Jordan, first place; Mac Byrum, second place; Billie Copeland, third; and Jer maine Brooks was honorable mention. Everyone was in suspense and anxiously awaited the decision from the Chicken Division. Theresa Clark, Home Economics Extension Agent, finally announced the winners: first place went to Natasha James; second place, Anita Jor dan; third place Sherrie Hill; and honorable mentione was Christina Rawley. Donors for the contest were S&R, Albemarle Cattlemen’s Association, and Northeastern Pork Council. The following volunteers served as judges: Eula Jordan, Trudy Parker, Pat Mansfield, Graham Far less, Rita Jones, and Cliff Copeland. Committee Is Formed A Marketing Education-DECA Advisory Committee has been formed. Members include business managers, community leaders and school personnel. At the first meeting, nine members were present. The committee has two primary purposes. The first is to ensure students are being taught ap propriate skills for entry-level employment. The second goal is to continue to meet the employment needs of the community as Eden ton continues business growth. The committee plans to meet at least four times during the school year.
