Jo Ellen Lofton, 27, lost control of her 1978 Chrysler on Yeopim Rd. about one mile east of N.C. 32 at 5:20 p.m. With her were her seven year-old daughter and two year-old son. The car jumped the ditch and came to rest on jts side in a field. Sty"-Mrs. Lofton reportedly hitchhiked home where she called in the accident and was then taken to Chowan Hospital, checked for injuries and released. Whitley said that the children were not in jured. He said that seat re straints were not worn and that Mrs. Lofton was cited for not using child seat re straints. Whitley also investigated accidents on Mexico Rd. and Rocky Hock Rd. He said that there was no major damages from any of the accidents. The accidents in the snow happened because "Everybody was just going a little too fast. When they applied their brakes, they lost control." He said that he also observed many motorists that were driving slowly and exercis ing due caution. The snow closed Edenton Chowan schools at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday and all day Friday and cancelled Friday night's basketball game. Renovation Plans Reviewed Continued From Page 1-A to the building for the handi capped, the plans were sent back to the town’s finance committee for cost estimates. The town is facing a dead line in the move of town of fices, some of which, in their present location, will be needed for the new 911 emer gency communications sys tem scheduled to be in opera tion by April 1 of this year. The police department is also scheduled to be moved into the present municipal building. Town Council Chamber will remain at its present lo cation. CPA J.P. Timberlake pre sented the board with a sum mary of an audit of the town's finances for the past year. The report was favorable with only a small percentage out standing in tax and utilities collections. The accountant attributed the improvement in collections to the county’s role in collecting for the town. Mayor John Dowd asked Timberlake, "We’re in a better financial condition than last year?" "Yes,” was the reply. During the meeting, Jimmy Patterson of the Edenton Utilities Dept, was presented the Grade I Wilbur E Long Jr., Operator of the Year memorial award. The statewide honor for a waste water treatment operator was presented by Ed Warren, Div. of Environmental Manage ment, N.C. Department of Natural Resources and Community Development. Mayor Dowd swore in members of the Historic Dis trict Commission, including just-appointed member Emily Irby of NCNB. Robert Halsey received council’s approval to rezone a lot on Badham Road from In dustrial Warehouse to R-5 Residential. Halsey com mented, "I'm taking my homeplace and making it into a two-family dwelling for rental purposes.” ' ’ ' ' -' - After the more than two hour meeting, the mayor an nounced that the council would go into executive ses sion, but said that the public could wait in their seats until council emerged if they wished. Council considered property acquisition and legal matters. If anyone waited, they saw council emerge from the closed session at 12:30 a.m. WWII Obit Continued From Page 1-A in starting the Bloodmobile in Edenton. Older Generation Dominates Polling Places If the last general election was any indication of things to come, gray heads will pre dominate at the polls in this year's elections. Figures from the Colonial Computer Co., managed by Tom Palmer, indicate that 60 percent of the voters in Chowan County in 1986 were 50 years of age or older. The company expects to have more demographic information available in the near future that will show the voter mix between men and women, by race and by county voting precincts. The county is divided into six precincts. The first town ship, Edenton, contains the first precinct, West Edenton and the second, East Edenton. The third precinct, Rocky Hock and the fourth, Center Hill are in the second town ship. The third township, Wardville, holds the fifth precinct and the fourth town ship, Yeopim, hosts the sixth precinct. The distinctions between townships, precincts and wards are confusing to some. Townships, areas of land, were created for tax purposes. Precincts are voting units of the county and the Town of Edenton is divided into wards for municipal elections only. The computer company said that the voting figures are un official and have an error rate of plus or minus three percent. Voting figures are a matter of public record. How a particular individual votes is, of course, a private matter. FOOT FASHIONS 40% OFF V FRLL & WINTER SHOES AND HRNDBRGS 309 BUILDING DOWNTOWN EDENTON * Nightstand NO Extra Charge!
