OBITUARIES /funerals, cards of thanks EDITH P. BUNCH Mrs. Edith Peele Bunch, 83 of the 3000 block of Rocky Hoc! Road, Edenton, died Tuesday Dec. 15, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Chowan County Mrs. Bunch was the daughtei of the late Myrtle Layton anc James Raleigh Peele and the wife of the late Albert Bunch She was a member of the Rocky Hock Baptist Church. She is survived by her son. Emmett Earl Bunch, and his wife Marjorie Hollowed Bunch of Chesapeake, VA; three brothers, J.D. Peele and Wallace Peele, both of Edenton, and Henderson Peele of Tyner, NC; and two grandchildren. Lisa Bunch of Portsmouth, VA and Barry7' Bunch of Chesa peake. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, in the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Cava officiating. Burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. MARVIN COBB MERRY HILL, NC - Mr. Tho mas Marvin Cobb, 69, of the 600 block of Avoca Farm Rd., died Saturday, Dec. 19, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. A native of Bertie County, Mr. Cobb was a son of the late Georgie Gray Harden and Tho mas Lloyd Cobb. He was a member of the Merry Hill Bap tist Church. FELTON Edward McClease Felton, 56, of 139 E. Gale St., Edenton, died Dec. 15 in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County, he was the son of Thelma McPhaul and the late McClease Felton, and the hus band of Dorothy W. Felton. He was a security guard and a member of the Canaan Temple AME Zion Church. Besides his wife and mother, survivors include: four sons, Ray Felton of Durham, NC, Jeffery Felton of Lewiston, NC, DeeAudrey Copeland of Edenton, and Charlie Wills of Baltimore, MD; two daughters, Doris Wills of Edenton and Gala Edwards of Winston-Salem, NC; and seven grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, in the Canaan Temple AME Zion Church in Edenton with the Rev. J.H. London officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. LONG VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Long, 81, formerly of Edenton, died Wednesday, Dec. 16, in Virginia Beach, VA. A native of Chowan County, Mrs. Long was a daughter of the late Goldie Parker and Jesse Smith and the wife of the late David Earl Long. She had worked in retail and alterations with Tarkington’s of Edenton and was a member of the Lynnhaven Methodist Women. She is survived by her daugh ter, Elizabeth Parker Rankins of Virginia Beach, VAjfour sis ters, Jessie Lee Lamb of Suf folk, VA, Emma Williams of Williamsburg, VA, Hilda Bass of Jacksonville, NC, and Mar garet Cousins of Williamsburg, VA; and a granddaughter, An drea Parker Rankins of Ra leigh, NC. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, in the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Epps officiating. Burial fol lowed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. ALAN JAY SHUMATE OWINGS, MD - Alan Jay Shumate, 26, of Owings, MD, died Nov. 20 in a boating acci dent. His body was found Dec. 5. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Diane Shumate; two daughters, Jessica Dianne Barron and Amber Jean Shumate of Owings, MD; par ents, Amos J. and Pat Shumate of Owings; a sister, Jean, and her husband, Paul Lacoste, of Floyd, VA; and maternal grand parents, George and Lillie Beamon of Edenton. Visitation was held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. with funeral services beginning at noon at Grace Brethren Church of Calvert County on Routes 2 and 260 in Owings. The Rev. John Hoffman officiated. SWAIN ROPER, NC - Erma Clifton Swain, 73, died Dec. 21 at her residence. Mrs. Swain was born in Wash ington County on Dec. 14,1925, and was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Clifton and Dessie Norman Clifton. She was retired from Edenton Primetime Village with 14 years of service. Mrs. Swain is survived by one daughter, Wanda Swain Anderson of Lewisville; four sons, Donald Chesson Swain, Sr. of Garner, James Ronald Swain of Roper, Thomas Lee Swain of Bridgeton, and Donald Chesson Swain, Jr. of Roper; and four grandchildren, Emily Swain, Steven Swain, Melissa Swain, and Ashley Queen. Mrs. Swain was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Chesson Swain, and three brothers, Norman Clifton, Rob ert Earl Clifton, and Ray Clifton. Funeral services will be held at Scuppernong Church of Christ in Creswell, NC on Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m.' * with the Mr. Mark Woolard officiating. WARD Josephine Stallings Ward, 70, Of the 500 block of Sign Pine Rd., Tyner, NC, died Wednes day, Dec. 16, at Brian Care Nursing Center in Hertford, NC. Mrs. Ward was born in Gates County. The daughter of the late Jim and Mary Frances' White Stallings, she was a homemaker and a member of the Warwick Baptist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Leland G. “Pat” Ward, and a daughter, Connie W. Byrum, she is survived by one other daughter, Mavis W.' Moore of Tyner, a brother, David Lee Stallings of Ft. Smith, AR, and five grandchil dren. ARCHIE L. WILDER Archie Lee Wilder, 73, of 2034 Rocky Hock Rd., died Dec. 16, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton. Survivors include: three sons, Theodore Morring and Arnell Wilder of Edenton, and Herman Privott of Baltimore, MD; three daughters, Linda Bond of Raleigh, NC, Anne P. Leary of Edenton, and Carolyn Reid of Elizabeth City; and four sisters, Minnie Wilder of Edenton, Elizabeth Taylor and Delsi Privott, both of Suffolk, VA, and Oliva Wilder of Bos ton. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, in the Warren’s Grove Mission ary Baptist Church. Burial fol lowed in the Wilder family cem etery in Edenton. Evans said that there are some basic guidelines that would make a person eligible for this special service. He said the plan has been discussed in depth with Chowan County Manager Cliff Copeland and Town Manager Anne-Marie Knighton of Edenton, and that the funeral home plans to pro vide all public servants with a letter in the near future ex plaining all the details of this offering. “We certainly hope that there is never a need to implement this plan,” Evans said. “We wish safety for all of our providers of public service when they are out doing their jobs. How ever, we have defined some basic steps to help a family know whether or not their loved one, at the time of death, would be eligible for these benefits.” He added that the funeral home was glad to be able to *' offer this special plan as a way •. of giving something back to those who give so much to the community. “Chowan County is my home, and I value the relationships, friendships and all of the com munity support that has been shown to us over the years-” Evans said. “We are honored to provide this service to the people of Chowan County.”
