Wildflowers' program Thursday Professor Peter White, direc tor of the North Carolina Bo tanical Garden, will be here tomorrow (Thursday) for a pro gram entitled “From the Appa lachians to the Coastal Plain: North Carolina’s Rich Wild flowers and Natural Ecology.” We are developing a “Listen ing Library” of high-interest books with accompanying un abridged tapes for younger kids through middle school readers. These book-and-tape kits can benefit beginning read ers and students with reading disabilities, or serve as fun and reinforcement at home or on car trips. Thirteen kits are available now. The purchase was made possible by Friends of the Library. Jones is a former co-curator at the Smithsonian Museum of American History and a native of Gates County. This program is intended to be the firsf step in a joint project between Shepard Pruden Memorial Library and two agencies plan to combine efforts to develop a permanent display that will document the history of Chowan County's cotton production and the op eration of the Edenton Cotton Mill During the library program, Jones will talk about the tech niques for completing success ful oral histories and answer questions about interviewing techniques and equipment needed. The Tornados scored a total of nine goals while allowing none. Goals were scored by Daniel Brusko, Katie Mapp, Kevin Newhams, Nicholas Summerford, and Damien Williams. In other games the Nor’East ers outscored the El Ninos 3-2 and the El Ninos defeated the Cyclones 4-1. Leigh Vogedes, Joseph Wells, and Alden Winslow kicked in goals for the El Ninos. Charis Cava, Kevin Gagnon, and Nick No durft scored for the Nor’East ers while Torris Norman put one in for the Cyclones. Starter league games are played on Mondays and Mite league on Tuesdays and Thursdays. VOLLEYBALL FREE PLAY Volleyball free play at Walker School will end this week but players are encour aged to continue playing by taking advantage of the sand volleyball court located in Co lonial Park. STEP AEROBICS CLASSES The Rec. Dept, is now offer ing three additional aerobics classes during the week. They , will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morn ings at 8:15 at the Rec. For more details you may call Connie at 482-2242. Skate-Athon scheduled Registration is now under way for the first Edenton Skate-Athon designed for "the young and the young at heart." The event will take place Saturday, May 15 (rain date: May 29) in the student park ing lot at John A. Holmes High School in Edenton. The Skate-Athon will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p,m. En try fee is $5 with proceeds going to the Chowan County 4 H Friends of Youth Govern or's One on One Program. Entry forms can be found at area schools or obtained by calling Mildred Vanterpool, executive director of the lo cal Governor's One on One program at 482-8431. "Bring your own roller blades, skateboards, or roller skates," said spokesman Missie Harrell. "Helmets and and kneepads are required!"; Hot dogs, chips and drink$ will be provided free of charge to registered skaters. Harrell also said that those wishing to skate may pick up their entry forms at the evdnif if they are unable to do so ift advance. Music for the Skate-Athon will be provided by Greg Sampson of radio station 89.9 at Elizabeth City State Uni versity. ; "We want to encourage ev eryone to come out and have a good time as they show thfcir support this very important community program for lo cal youth," said Harrell.
