Horton, a lawyer, may have made the best argument against his own preference for non-partisan elections. In his entire legal career, he said, he had not encountered a single judge in North Carolina who didn’t treat him fairly. Sounds like a system that ain’t broke. Why fix it? I am writing especially to those who for some reason have not given this restaurant a chance. I can truly say one wouldn't be sorry they went. Creekside is a place where the owner, Gale Finan, greets you at the door, the Executive Chef, Delbert White, is attuned to those with special dietary needs and talks with the guests, the bartender is friendly and talkative, the servers are genu ine and knowledgeable about what they serve, and everyone behind the scenes, in the kitchen and utility, are like family. Creekside is a place where friends are made and delicious food is eaten. Good luck and thank you all. Tammy Mercer Asheville, NC Herald Classifieds... Flusser was waiting east of Plymouth, where he had “linked together two of his strongest ships...hoping to lure the Con federate ram between the two, snare it in the chains, and then hammer it to pieces,’-’ Trotter explained. Commander Cooke figured out the plan, and re versed the course of the Albemarle, ramming into the two Union ships, sinking one. The crew of the second ship, the Miami, attempted to board the ram, but men atop the super structure of the Albemarle held them off. When Flusser fired a Parrott, rifle directly at the Albemarle, the huge shell struck the Confederate ironclad, bounced high into the air with a shower of sparks, and - incred ibly - landed back on the deck of the Miami,” where it detonated, killing Flusser and wounding 12 others. The Miami and other Federal ships fled toward the Sound. On April 20, 1864, the Union surrendered Plymouth. The Albemarle had, in the space of a few hours, unlocked the whole defensive scheme of Union forces in Plymouth, Trotter con cluded. Now General Hoke wanted Cooke and the Albemarle to pro vide naval power in his battle to retake New Bern. (Next week: The naval battle in Albemarle Sound) m LAST CALL . . . WHILE ITEMS LAST!
