Manning Orthodontist Tops Team fly make, fly balloons BY AMY BIVENS Eighth Grade student The sun was shining brightly as balloons of all colors and design took to the sky at Chowan Middle School on Tues day, March 30. Students on the Tops Team from Rhonda Tynch’s, Katherine Russell’s, Bettina McDougal’s, and Doug Ashton’s classes filled onto the stands by the baseball field to fly balloons that they had made in class. One by one, each group went up to launch. A group of four or five students situated their balloon by holding the top and bottom, while letting the hot air fill the balloon. I wo stu dents had to stand in a chair to hold the balloon. It was allowed to fill up for one minute and fifteen seconds, then it was released. Judges timed how long each balloon stayed in the air. The students cheered for each bal loon as it was launched. Every class on the Tops team had worked hard to win the two prizes of a pizza party or Coke and candy given to each class, with the overall winner receiv ing a trophy. The balloons were put to gether with tissue paper. Stu dents made the bottom of the balloon, and then glued the sides togetner. me sides and the bottom of the balloon were then fastened by glue. The hard part was getting a single square of tissue paper to go across the top of the balloon. Lastly, four pennies were taped to the bot tom to add a little weight to help it fly. The final results for overall winners were: Rhonda Tynch’s class - Anecia Wills, Jay Horne, and Elizabeth Harris. This team won first place for their class and overall winners for the team. They will receive their winning trophy at an awards ceremony held at the end of the school year. Paula Rinehart honored as exemplary elementary mathamatics teacher Paula D. Fifth graders take a trip to J amestown BY SHELLEY FAIRCLOTH On Wednesday, April 14,1999 Mrs. Miller’s 5th grade class went to Jamestown. We rode on an activity bus. Our class went on this trip to get a closer look at what Jamestown was . really like. We arrived at school at 6:45 AM. Then off we went. Three fifth grade classes were going. The classes going were Mrs. Miller’s class, Mrs. Nixon’s class, and Mrs. Leary’s class. It took lis about two hours to reach the ferry dock. On the way to the ferry dock, some people played gameboys, some people talked, some read books and I think I even saw someone asleep. Once we got on the ferry, our class was allowed to get off the bus and walk around. After we arrived at Jamestown, we met our tour guide, Mrs. Harper. The. first thing she took us to see was the three ships that the English came over to America on, which were the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discov ery. My class got to tour the Susan Constant. We learned that 54 out of 144 passengers I came over to America on the Susan Constant. After our tour of the ships, we went to the James Fort. At the James Fort, we saw and learned how the homes were built. At one section of the fort a man fired a musket. At an other station, we learned how to waddle. Waddling is weav ing wood to form the first layer of the houses. After that you would put a hard clay on the house to prevent leaks and other things from getting in See JAMESTOWN On Page 8-A On Your Side—For Life. ilationwide's term life insurance-for all your protection needs.
