Elliott III at their home. The couple exchanged their wedding vows on April 14,1949. Being a blooming genius How do you help your flow ers stay fresh? First, water deeply and thor oughly once a >veek. It takes about an inch of water to soak roots deeply enough to make a difference. You'll know you've applied an inch by placing a few shallow bowls among the plants; when they collect an inch of water, turn of f the sprin kler. Note the time this takes so you'll have a guideline for every watering thereafter. Water is crucial to most an nuals and perennials. Petunias and impatieris are quick to wilt but are forgiving if you water them promptly. Caladiums are not so forgiving; let them wilt down and they may go dor mant! Your persistence with regular, deep watering will give plants the ability to hang on through hot weather stress. Moving potted plants to areas where they get shade in theafternoonsmayhelp. Ifyoii repot them, be sure to use a . potting soil which contains water-retaining polymers and a wetting agent. This will help the soil retain moisture longer in hot weather, yet allow for j good drainage. Next, snip off faded flowers j from annuals such as gerani ums, marigolds, petunias, and scarlet sage; continue pinch ing off the faded blooms as they wither. This keeps flow ers from setting seed so plants will have more energy for new growth and more flowers. An nuals will need a dose of fertil izer to fuel the new growth and flowering that will last until the first frost. Apply a time released fertilizer that will feed the plants gradually and with out burning. Finally, mulch flower beds with two to three inches of bark to help keep the soil cool and moist. Mulch keeps water from evaporating from the surface of the'soil. Working like a si lent gardener, mulch also keeps down weeds. Read the Herald weekly and stay informed!
