In the 1960s, he recalled, rescue squads were lucky to have ra dios. And, he said, there was no such thing as a pager. “They had to call you at your home, a restaurant...wherever you might be,” he said. And, he added that it was not until the 1970s that hospitals began having emergency doc tors on staff. “Before that, you used to have to call a doctor at home and get him out of bed if you needed him,” he said. Shaw said that training for rescue squad workers took a giant leap around 1973, when basic emergency medical training (EMT) classes were begun. Then, in the 1980s, ad vanced life support became available. “In the early days, basic first aid was the rule,” he said. “We have certainly come a long way from there.” Good, solid training com bined with a sense of dedica tion and a desire to serve is what makes a rescue squad unit successful, Shaw said. “It takes dedication and it takes a desire to get the job done,” he said. “If you don’t have the dedication, you won’t last long...I have achieved what I have because my family and my God stood firmly behind me....He will be there when the chips are down. He’s always there to put that helping hand on you if you will just let Him.” At the conclusion of Shaw’s remarks, service awards were presented. Recipients were: • 10-year service awards, recipients Frankie Parrish, George Lassiter, and Merrill Jennings, presented by James Brabble; • 20-year service award to James Brabble and Russell Blanchard • Retirement Award - pre sented by Steve White to Carroll Evans and Mike Evans New officers were installed by Chowan County Commis sioner Harry Lee Winslow, and closing remarks were offered by Jean Burr, chief of the Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad.
