GRIFFIN RANKS HIGH IN STATE COMPETION The Edenton-Chowan Schools Transportation Department held its annual Bus Rodeo on May 17,1999 at the bus/maintenance garage. Pictured (l-r) are 1999 Bus Rodeo winners, Mary Griffin, first place; Pearlie Parks, second place; and Patricia Waff, third place. The bus rodeo is part of a regional and state competition held to test drivers' skills in maneuvering school buses on driving courses. Griffin advanced to regional competition held in Williamston and from there on to the North Carolina School Bus Driving Competition held at Raleigh State Fair Grounds on May 26, where she placed ninth. Griffin, a teacher assistant and school bus driver at White Oak Elementary School competed against 55 drivers from school systems across North Carolina. Holmes Class of 2001, is one of only 160 stu dents from around the world selected to participate in an extraordinary leadership pro gram for outstanding high school students. -X While attending The National Student Leadership Confer ence on International Law and Diplomacy, Powers will have the opportunity to explore and experience, firsthand, the world of political decision-mak ing and international conflict resolution. r 1 Brianna Powers This summer, gifted high school students from around the United States and over 31 foreign countries will find themselves immersed in a learning environment unlike any they have ever experi enced, They may find theitt selves in a United Nations Se curity council briefing where they will assume the role of United Nations delegates in arder to discuss a controver sial international issue, draft United Nations resolutions, or prepare ror an international summit. Students will also at tend special workshops de signed to help develop their communication and negotia tion skills. Special briefings from domestic and interna tional experts add a sense of reality and bring the issues to life. Past speakers have in cluded Senators, Congressional Representatives, Ambassa dors, Presidential candidates, Federal and State Court judges, as well as Pentagon and White House officials. Through participation in this extraordinary eleven day pro* gram, students not only de velop a better understanding of international law and poli tics, but they develop the abil ity to think on their feet, en gage in critical analysis, and effectively communicate - skills that will serve them well in high school, college, and be vond.
