A 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter allowed the Aces (4-3 overall, 2-1 N-AC) to open up a seldom-seen facet of their offense: the passing game. Aces halfback D.J. Rankins caught the only two touchdown passes of the game, both com ing in the first half. Quarter back Kevin Slade hit Rankins on a 35-yard pass from the Aces ’ 39-yard line that Rankins con tinued for a touchdown in the first quarter. Slade connected again with Rankins in the left side of the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown with 50 sec onds left before the half. Outstanding blocking al lowed Rankins to use his speed for the first touchdown of the third quarter. An option out to the left side from their own 46 yard line, Rankins hauled across the field, hitting the end zone near the right corner. Edenton had a field day on the ground, running 40 times for 478 yards. Jermain Jack-, son tallied 164 yards in five attempts, scoring twice for the Aces. Slade passed a perfect 4 for-4 for 109 yards, while the defense leashed Manteo’s run ning game, allowing the Redskins only 52 yards on 39 carries. Aces coach Jay Swicegood said he was concerned at the start whether his team would come out aggressive. “We had great intensity on defense,” he said. “And some good blocking on the wideouts allowed us to use our speed. We got a chance to throw the ball tonight. We had good pass routes and Slade did a good job getting the ball to the receiv ers.” Edenton hosts arch-rival Perquimans County Friday in another N-AC game. Edenton Aces fullback Mario Bond (#40) rushes for a big gain, as D.J. Rankins (#11) looks on. Rankins caught the only two touchdown passes of the game.
