Classes held at the Rec. Dept, include Kickboxing at 8:30 a.m. on Monday and Friday mornings and Step at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. Cost is $3 per class. Classes held at the E.A. Swain Community Center include: Step at 5:15 p.m. on Mondays, Wednes days and Thursdays: Step at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays; Step/Interval at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and 9 a.m. on Thursdays: Step and Tone at 9 a.m. on Saturdays. Cost is $3 per visit or S20 a montfi. Uniforms and Equipment All players, parents, and coaches who participated in any Rec. Dept, activity during the past year are asked to return uniforms and equipment that they may have for gotten to return at the end of the season so the Rec. Dept, staff can prepare for the upcom ing year. Volleyball Free Play The Rec. Dept, will offer Volley ball Free Play at D.F. Walker School gym on Thursday nights from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., beginning Thursday, Jan. 6. Cost is $1 per person each night. Mite Basketball Results The Mite League began action last Friday night with four games. In the first game Derrick Godfrey was high scorer for the Honeybees with nine points in their 13-6 win over the Jackets. Campbell Brown and Nick Summerford added two points each for the Jackets. Torris Norman and Shontavia Davis scored four and two points respec tively for the Jackets. Derrick Phillips was the high scorer of the night, putting 12 points on the board for the Swarm in their 14-7 win over fhe Stingers. Nick Nodurft also scored two points for the Swarm. Justin Marschalkerweerd, Caleb Pruden, See REPORT On Page 11-B American Legion Post brings cheer The American Legion Post 40 family elves, along with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, brought a little Christmas cheer to all of the Spe cial Education classes at White Oak Elementary, D.F. Walker Elemen tary, Chowan Middle School, John A. Holmes High School and Life, Inc., by giving each of them a Christmas party with cake and drinks, a Christmas bag full of goodies, Christmas carols, and a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Santa. Winn-Dixie generously donated all of the Christmas cakes for the parties. The Legion family elves and Mr. and Mrs. Claus also visited with the veterans in our area nursing homes. Mr .and Mrs. Claus brought them Christmas cheer, a stocking full of goodies, a present just for them and their favorite fruit, ba nanas. American legion elves join Santa Claus in sharing the joy of the holiday season during visits to area schools and nursing homes. The group also paid a visit to Christmas party with them, and Brian Center in Hertford for a some time for visiting as well. Chowan Middle School earns honored The North Carolina Middle School Association Region 1 is pleased to announce that teachers at Chowan Middle School have earned two of its top honors. The Explorer team, comprised of Casey Bunch, Rae Knox, Sheila Strickland, and Florence Winslow, was named the NCMSA Region 1 Team of the Year. According to Karen Luczcz, Re gion 1 Director, the panel of judges chose this CMS team because of its school and team spirit, the team’s willingness to incorporate high school tutors twice a week, the com mon expectations they have for all their students, the opportunities they provide for student recogni tion, and the incorporation of Char acter Education into their advi sor/advisee program. G-44 BEFORE THE NORTH CAROLINA UTILITIES COMMISSION In the Matter of Joint Application of Albemarle Pamlico Economic Development Corporation and Carolina Power & Light Company for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity to Operate as a Local Distribution Natural Gas Company in the 14 Unserved Counties in Eastern North Carolina, the Exclusive Franchises to Provide Natural Gas Service to these Counties, and Natural Gas Bond Funds to Pay for the Uneconomic Portion of the Project f PUBLIC NOTICE OF APPLICATION AND HEARING ' NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on October 26, 1999, Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) and Albemarle Pamlico Economic Development Corporation (APEC) filed a joint application pursuant to N.C.G.S. 62-36A, 62-110 and 62 159 and Commission Rules R6-90 through R694 for the following: (I) a certificate of public convenience and necessity to own and/or operate natural gas facilities as a public utility in the counties of Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Gates, Perquimans, Chowan, Washington, Tyrrell, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico, Jones, Carteret and Pender; (2) the exclusive franchises to , provide natural gas in these counties; and (3) sufficient natural gas bond funds to pay for the uneconomic portion of the project proposed to be constructed to serve these 14 counties. The total cost of such a project is estimated to be $197.5 million, and its negative net present value is estimated to be $186 million. . Details of the application can be obtained at the Office of the Chief Clerk of the North Carolina Utilities Commission, Fifth Floor, Dobbs Building, 430 North Salisbury Street, Raleigh, North Carolina, where a copy of the application is available for review by any interested person. Upon written request, the Commission will place copies of the application and prefiled testimony in centrally located libraries.
