"The railroad was not always readily accepted and at one time 80% of the citizens voted against bringing a railroad into the area," said Coffey. However, as history would prove, the railroad did become a reality for the Edenton area, remaining active until the mid 1950s. (Staff photo by Helen Outland Kerr) Albemarle Literary Center will co-sponsor publishing program ELIZABETH CITY, NC — Known for searching out and publishing new authors, Coastal Carolina Press (CCP) will be featured at a confer ence and festival on Saturday, March 24, co-sponsored by the Albemarle Literary Center and the Cooperative Extension Ser vice. “Making a Difference: Writ ing and Publishing in North Carolina” is the title of the pro gram, which will bring Coastal Carolina press authors and staff to the Pasquotank Center from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for in formal and panel discussions, featured workshop, book signings and exhibits. “Making a difference is what it’s all about; that’s why we write and publish,” said Lola Scales-Boone, Elizabeth City businesswoman, emerging au thor and treasurer of the Albemarle Literary Center Inc., a nonprofit corporation servingnonprofits. Withaphe nomenal publishing record for a hew press — and a nonprofit press, at that — Coastal Caro lina Press, founded by UNC CH Professor Andrew Scott of Chapel Hill, has published more than twenty books in two years, and has another dozen in the publishing pipeline. “This is a publishing miracle,” said Dana Hay, ex ecutive director of the Albemarle Literary Center, who also has served on the Coastal Carolina Press non profit board since the found ing in 1998. “Most book pub lishing houses today try to maximize their profits. Coastal Carolina Press is publishing beautiful books, and making them very affordable so that everyone can share in our heri tage and progress.” Among authors and staff par ticipating will be Associate Editor Nicole R. Smith, who is also with Carolina Women’s Press which began as a CCP imprint and has recently spun off as a separate nonprofit cor poration. Smith will speak on how editors look for new au thors and how authors should present their work. Dorothy Gallagher, market ing director for both presses, will provide packets with pub lishing information for new and emerging authors. Pub lished authors scheduled to speak include marine biologist Vicki Thayer and Donna Smith Campbell, who writes histori cal fiction for young readers. Photographer Scott Taylor, author of Coastal Waters and the soon-to-be released “Song of an Unsung Place, ’’will speak on how authors and photogra phers successfully collaborate. Featured guest Carole Boston Weatherford will present a spe cial workshop on “Turning In spiration into Print”. This program is made pos sible through the support of the North Carolina Arts Coun cil, adivision of the North Caro lina Department of Cultural Resources. Lunch will be served.
