'Where Truth Lies' is first novel by Rupert Holmes This is another reminder that we will be closed on Tuesday, July 22. There will be a lot of computer magic going on that day and we’ll open as usual on Wednesday Where the Truth Lies is the first novel by talented Ruper Holmes. A young female journalist is writing a story about a Martin/Lewis-type comedy team whose career was wrecked by a scandal. Author Holmes currently ha a play on Broadway Say Goodnight, Gracie, about the real-life comedy pair of George Burps and Gracie Allen. As you are probably aware Oprah’s book club has been relaunched with an Ameri can classic as the first selection. And that choice gave new life to sales of East of Eden by John Steinbeck, now second only to the new Harry Potter book at the cash register. Executive Power by Vince t Flynn pits a cadre of interna tional agents led by Mitch Rapp against terrorists who plan a series of assassina tions that will further accelerate tensions in the 3 Middle East. Danielle Steel’s fifty-eighth (sure to be bestselling) novel is Johnny Angel. Johnny dies tragically on prom night, but returns as an angel to repair , his family’s troubled relation ships. Janet Daily continues the Calder family saga with Check It Out ROSALIE MILLER Shifting Calder Wind. Ac cording to local newspaper accounts, Chase Calder perished in an automobile accident. He survived, however, thanks to a cowboy Samaritan who continues to protect Chase during his recovery. Judgment Calls is by Alafair Burke, daughter of crime novelist James Lee Burke. Alafair is a former district attorney who now teaches criminal law. She’s receiving great reviews for Judgment Calls, her debut novel. It’s the first in a projected series about a tough, but fair-minded Portland district attorney named Samantha Kincaid. The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier pre-dates her better-known Girl with a Pearl Earring. Ella Turner becomes interested in her French forbearers after she and her husband move there. The book unfolds with chapters alternating between Ella and an ancestress who lived four hundred years ago: Great Parties on Small Budgets covers all ages and many different themes. A magazine on our shelves entitled Family Fun seems to have kids’ party ideas in each issue, as well as craft instruc tions and vacation sugges tions for destinations that are family oriented. The Work at Home Sourcebook has ideas for home business opportuni ties, marketing your handcrafts, and telecommu ting to work. Caroline Kennedy gathered songs, poetry, documents and speeches from across the years and around the politi cal spectrum for A Patriot’s Handbook. There are many photographs, also, represen tative of moments great and small in American life: Ruby Bridges entering school in New Orleans, 1960; baptism in the river; Joe Di Maggio swinging a baseball bat. The television series Dallas ran from 1978 to 1991, a hit with huge Nielson ratings. Now you can watch it again thanks to a donation of videotapes to the library. There are two episodes per tape and a total of twenty three tapes. Each is labeled with attention-getting titles such as “Black Market Baby” and “Triangle.” Five nights of classical, modern dance and music are set at Pavilion MANTEO, NC - The final week of the “illuminations” Summer Performing Arts Se ries will feature an exciting combination of classical and contemporary dance and live percussion and strings. Performances will be held at Roanoke Island Festival Park’s beautiful Outdoor Pavilion July 22 - 26 at 8 p.m. Visitors are invited to bring picnics, blan kets and lawn chairs and kick back on the lawn to enjoy the performances. The North Carolina School of the Arts Schools of Dance and Music will present a di verse program using music by Christopher Rouse, Tchaikov sky, Stravinsky and Mendel ssohn. Contemporary dancers will share the stage with the NCSA Percussion Ensemble in “Downbeat,” using swing mo tifs to Rouse’s exhilarating composition “Bonham,” and they will perform a choreo graphic world premiere to Rouse’s Hawaiian-inspired “Ku-Ka-Ilimoku.” NCSA alum nus Rick McCullough choreo graphed both dances. Also on the dance program will be the Wedding Pas De Deux from the final act of Petipa’s “Sleeping Beauty” and the Pas De Deux from Balanchine’s ground-breaking ballet “Agon.” Students and alumni will close the program in McCullough’s ballet “Cour sings.” This neo-classical bal let was originally performed by the Pittsburgh Ballet The ater. Ballet will be accompa nied by a live string octet. NCSA dancer alumni come to “illuminations” from pres tigious national companies such as American Ballet The ater Studio Company, Boston Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Chi cago Joffrey Ballet and Wash ington Ballet. Back by popular demand, a ballet master class with McCullough will be offered free of charge on Wednesday, July 23 at 10 a.m. at Roanoke Island Festival Park.
