Roland Vaughan presided over
his last Edenton town council
meeting as mayor on Dec. 10.
It was as much of a goodbye to
24 years of service as it was a wel
come to the new Edenton town
council, as Jimmy Stallings took
the oath of office as mayor. Incum
bent Samuel “Sambo” Dixon took
the oath of office as a councilor,
as did newcomers Roger Coleman
and Hackney High Jr.
During the meeting Vaughan,

who wore a Carolina blue bow-tie
with the Edenton seal on it, noted
his family members who were in
attendance for the momentous
occasion.
During his speech, Vaughan
noted how Ecclesiastes 3 verses
1-8, known as “A Time for Every
thing,” seemed fitting for this oc
casion.
“I added one more line: ‘A time
to stay and a time to go,”’ he said
with a laugh.
Vaughan noted that he had no
words that could adequately ex
press the gratitude he has in serv
ing as Edenton’s mayor.
“It is because of the citizens
of this community that we have
enjoyed the successes,” he said.
“Thank you all for your volunteer
ism and your support of this coun
cil over the years. It means a lot to
us who have served.”
In reflecting on why he ran
as mayor, he noted a quote from
Hargrove “Skipper” Bowles Jr., an
influential Democratic politician
and father of Erskine Bowles, one
of Vaughan’s high school class-
mates.

Former Edenton Mayor Roland
Vaughan has an extensive biog
raphy - husband, father, grand
father, business owner, banker,
stock broker, jeweler and much
more.
His wife Peggy Anne, First
Lady of Edenton, dropped off his
resume so as to provide an 8 x

complishments over the years.
Well... Mr. Vaughan is going to
need to update his bio - he has
joined the Order of the Longleaf
Pine.
The Order of the Longleaf Pine
is an honor granted by the State of
North Carolina to individuals who
have shown extraordinary service
to the state.
It is the highest award for state
service granted by the Office of
the Governor. The highest civil
ian honor the state can bestow.
The award recognizes outstand
ing contributions to the state and
nation in the areas literature, sci
ence, the fine arts and public ser
vice.
After last Tuesday’s (Dec. 10)
council meeting, Vaughan was
presented the award by his good
friend Hood Ellis, Town Attorney,
at a large party held at the Chow
an Arts Council’s studio on Water
Street.

evening’s sunny skies welcomed
several thousand visitors to Eden

As of about 4 p.m. Saturday, the

The historical building on South

their picture taken a lot. The vis

I week in Washing-

Being that it is the first district
office opened in northeastern
North Carolina in decades, Mur

mood.
However, Murphy admitted
that he was less than enthusiastic
about answering questions formu
lated by the Daily Advance.
Rather than parse, trim or edit
Murphy’s comments, the Chowan
Herald chose to publish Murphy’s
comments from Saturday’s inter
view verbatim.
The congressman did his duty to
state his position on impeachment
and defend President 'frump.
Murphy said that Trump has
“done nothing wrong.” First ques
tion from the Daily Advance to
Murphy was if it is OK for a pres
ident to seek help from a foreign
government in our elections and
to use taxpayer-funded foreign
aid and a Wlute House meeting as
leverage to obtain that help?
Murphy spoke with passion
when he answered, “No, it js not.
