Murphy, North Carolina Favors Publicity For Smoky Mts. Monroe Redden, candidate for the Democratic nomination for congress from the twelfth congress ional district, urges North Carolina and Tennessee to move hand in hand in the development of the Great Smoky Mountains National M "In my opinion. The Great I Smoky Mountains National Park is the most valuable national attrac tion in Western North Carolina. More publicity on a national scale is given to Western North Carolina ' by reason of this park than anv other attraction we possess. "It up to the people to exploit ' the possibilities of this treasured possession. It fits into the life of this section. We have long been a ' tourist center of wide attraction. Our mountains are famous for their | scenic beauty. The time has come when we should now ? not two i years from now ? call together our I congressional leadership of North Carolina and Tennessee in order that a program of progress and development of this park may be inaugurated. "There is no reason why North Carolina and Tennessee should not move hand in hand in urging the development of this park. The people of both states have a com ( mon interest in its development. "I believe this generation is en titled to enjoy the beauties and ad vantages of this park in substantial completion. There is no reason why its development should be postponed for the pleasure of other generations. While America moves forward industrially, agriculturally md on all other economic fronts, we should not lag behind in' this section because of our failure to take advantage of our present op portunities. "The completion of this park will mean that millions of dollars and millions of people will pour into our section annually that otherwise would go elsewhere. 1 suggest that we join in a united front and demand action now". New Flour Can Be Used Same Way As The Old BY RUTH CURRENT N. C. State College The new 80 percent extraction fiour should offer no problem in home baking, the food specialists tell us. The cook who has been making good biscuits with the flour which has been on the market can continue to use the same recipes and mcthodist with the new flour. To the homemaker starting out with her first batch of the new Hour, the specialists suggest: (1) Follow your own recipe as usual, unless the manufacturer gives specific directions on the package for his particular flour; (2) If the dough or batter seems a little soft with the familiar recipe, try using a little less liquid and a bit more flour in the mixture. These are minor adjustments that some of the new flour may need, if the pro ducts do not quite come up to your family's standards. One good way to space and shar^ w heat is to use more potatoes and Jess bread for the energy food in family meals. Potatoes are now plentiful and at present prices are an inexpensive energy food. Penny for penny, potatoes offer more fuel value than any other vegetable, Potatoes are no more "fattening" than bread. One medium-sizod potato and one thick slice of bread (or two thin slices' both have about J 00 calories. It is the gravy, but ter or other fat used on potatoes that pile up calories ? and put on pounds. Potatoes fit into any meal ? breakfast, dinner, or supper. TELEPHONES for FARMERS a Big Part of Our Expansion Activities We're busily engaged in rural telephone service extension, which is a major objective of our current expansion activities. Farm telephone service does more than provide the convenience of the telephone to people in rural areas. It places more and more farm residents in contact with people and businesses in town, and in turn puts these people in contact with the farm families . . . makes telephone service more valuable and beneficial to all. -~L" Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company = Incorporated ? ? ? DAN K. MOORE Candidate for SOLICITOR We think the voters - and particularly the veteran voters -of Cherokee County should know something about the service record of DAN K. MOORE, one of the candidates for Solicitor in the coming primary. DAN MOORE is a married man of forty years of age. He had been practicing law for sixteen years when, about three years ago, notwithstanding the fact that he was a married man with two children, he volunteer ed for service in the U. S. Army. He spent approximately two years in the service as an enlisted man, a large part of it at the battle front in Europe, and has only recentlv returned to his law prac tice which he broke up to enter the service of his coun try. MR. MOORE is an able lawyer and a gentleman, as his father, .Judge Fred Moore, was before him. He is the only one of the candidates for solicitor who saw service in this war. He worked two years for his coun try on an enlisted man's pay. We felt that when they knew the facts the people of Cherokee County would want to give a World War II veteran the preference we think he deserves. This advertisement was not solicited by Mr. Moore. It is spon sored and paid for by Veteran supporters of Cherokee County.
