Towns County To Celebrate Centennial July 7 On Saturday, July 7, Towns County will observe its 100th birth day with a Centennial Celebration In Hlawassee. Beginning at 10 a. 1 m. witc a rasnion show featuring costumes of the 1850's, the pro* gram will include recognition of descendents of Governor George Washington Towns, for whom the county was named. Following this there will be an address by Geor gia's Governor, Marvin Griffin. At 3 p. m. a parade will include a number of floats depicting the early days, the early schools and churches, the ways In which fami lies lived and worked, aa well aa modes of transportation. The crude tools of the 1850'a will be on dis play, along with some of the home made furniture and hand make clothing. In contrast, the remain ing floats will be modern in de sign. Two queens will reign over the parade ? Miss Centennial and Miss Towns County. These queens will be selected from six girls sponsored by the three Parent | Teacher organizations in Towns County. The six girls include Miss Janie Eller, Titus, Georgia; Miss Joeda Taylor, Presley, Georgia; Misses Claudine Presley and Jan ice Wilson of Hiawassee, and Ettie Sue Hunt and Betty Brown of Young Harris. OWNER Valleytown Church In New Building The attractive, new VaUeytown Baptist Church, located in Valley town near Andrews, was recent ly completed at a cost of $30,000, including free labor. The church was organized in 1935 and had outgrown the old Church building before the pres ent building was started July 1, 1955, in a new location. The church, made of brick and electrically heated, is very mod ern and up-to-date in all appoint ments. The pastor, the Rev. Ralph Matheson has served the church for the past five years. The church membership has now increased to 420. The Board of Deacons are: H. G. Hogan, Lee Brown, Jake Brown Clarence West, Clarence Hogan, Lawrence Anderson, Alder Pur ser, Elmo Mosteller. The Centennial Calaboose has housed many an unsuspecting guest during the past few weeks, and as the time for the celebration draws nearer, more and more clean-shaven visitors win have an opportunity to add their names to the guest register. For several weeks Centennial costumes have been popular attire for young and old, and pictures on display in Hooper's Drug Store show many Towns Countians in > the styles of a century ago.
