Bids were accepted for buying the paintings. Paintings were shown In the media of oil, water color, pastel, pencil, pen and Ink and crayon. Gloria Bowman Receives Nursing Scholarship Gloria Ann Bowman, daughter) of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Bowman of Murphy, has been awarded a full three-year scholarship to The Grady School of Nursing. Miss Bowman will gaduate next week from Murphy High School. She and Miss Shriley Stiles this week were named the most out-! standing basketball players on the girls' squad. Miss Bowman played basketball for Murphy High for four years. She has served as a junior mar shall and this year was prompter in the senior class play. She was a majorette her sophomore year. Miss Bowman has served on the student council for the past three years- She is a member of the Boomerang this year. She is active in church work and serves as Bible Reader Lead er in Training Union. Miss Bowman plans to work this summer in Pennsylvania. Decoration Day Set At Ebenezer Church Decoration Day will be observed Sunday at Ebenezer Church. Miss Bowman . . . gets scholarship Rev. J. A. Morris Announces Sermon Rev. J. Alton Morris Sunday night will preacn on "Preparation for Life". At this time the high school sen iors will be recognized and the church will present a gift to the 10 members of the graduating class who are members of the church. Betty Weaver, Wilma filadson Honor Students Miss Betty Weaver is valedic toian and Miss Wiima Christine Gladson is salutatorian of the graduating class of Murphy High School this year. Miss Gladson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Gladson of Culber son Route 2, is secretary of the senior class. She has been a mem ber of the 4-H Club for two years, chorus for two years, Glee Club, a typist on the Boomerang staff; associate editor of the Kanuhsheta, secretarial practice and business club for two years. She is a junior marshal. Miss Gladson plans to major in busi ness in college- She is an active member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Miss Weaver is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weaver of Murphy. She has been a member of the Journalism Club for three years, editor of the Kanuhsheta, news editor of the Boomerang and served as a delegate to the Edi tor's Roundtable at Western Caro lina College. Miss Weaver ?erved on the Stu dent Council two years and is a past president 0t the Photography Club. She wdt secretary of the TAC Council. She has participated in the State Music Contest for the past five years, playing the clari net and piano. She is the only student from Murphy High to be named all state in band. Miss Weaver holds metals in band, biology, general science, chemistry and Latin. She is a chief marshal at the school. She has accepted a scholarship Miss Weaver . . . valedictorian Miss Gladson . . . salutatorian to Duke under the auspices of Angier B. Duke Scholarship Foun dation. Miss Weaver will major in science at the university. She was also a finalist in the National Mer it Scholarship competition. nr <na Graduations Slated At 3 High Schools i ?? ? Commencement Next Week At Murphy, Andrews, Hiwassee Dam The Rev- W. H. Hampton ol Macon, Ga-, will deliver the bac calaureate sermon to Murphy High School seniors Sunday morning at 11:15. Services will be held in the high school gymnasium. The Rev. J. A. Morris, pastor of First Baptist Church, will give the invocation. This will be followed by the congregation singing the hymn, "O Worship The King." After the scripture reading by Rev. Hampton, the High School Chorus will sing "How Lovely Are Thy Dwelling." The speaker will be introduced by Principal Walter Puett. Mrs. Duke Whitley will be pian ist. Ushers will be Patricia Mas on, Jo Ann Haney, Carolyn Farm er, Margaret Ritch and Billy Winford McClure. Former Murphy High Supt. H. Bueck will be principal speaker at graduation exercises Tuesday night at 8 at the school. Mr. Bueck is superintendent of Macon Coun ty Schools. He will be introduced by Miss Betty Weaver, a gradu ate and honor student this year. Rev. R. A. Potter, pastor of the Presbyterian Church will give the invocation. Mr. Puett will speak to the hon or students. Supt. Honor students this year at Andrews High School are Delia Mae Bailey, Hugh Jean Lambert and Jean Edwards. These three seniors were named honor students because each maintained an above 90 scholastic average the past four years. Miss Bailey is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bailey of And rews. She has been a member of the Science Club and the Glee Club. She participated in the Field Day at Western Carolina College in her freshman and sophomore years. Miss Bailey served as a marshal last year and Was chos en "Most Talented" in the election of senior superlatives. She plans to attend the Beauty School in Asheville upon graduating from AHS. Miss Lambert is the granddaugh ter of Mrs. Dora Lambert of An dews, with whom she now resides. She is a member of the FHA, Latin Club and Journalism Club. She was a member of the 1958 annual staff and was chosen "Most Studious" in the election of superlatives. She was a marshal in the 1957 graduation exercises Her plans for the future are not yet certain. Miss Edwards is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Edwards of Marble. She has twice been elected to a class office. She was reporter of her sophomore class and secre tary of the class in her junior year. She is a member of the FHA, the Beta Club and the Latin Club. She has been a member of the Glee Club in previous years. Miss Bailey Miss Edwards Miss Edwards was a marshal last year and worked with the annual staff this year. She is not certain about her plans after graduation from high school. TWO MEN DROWN IN SEPARATE ACCIDENTS NEAR HERE SUNDAY i i Two persons drowned in separate accidents within a few miles of each other near Murphy Sunday. Sheriff Claude Anderson listed the victims as James F. Harwood, 52, of Asheville, and Claude C. Truelove, 25, or Dalton, Ga. Mr. Truelove was a native of Murphy. Mr. Harwood drowned in Hiwas see Lake about four miles west of Murphy when he fell from a boat while fishing. Mr- Truelove drowned in Cane Creek about four miles south of Murphy when be apparently was seized with cramps while swim ming across the stream. Mr. Harwood who was fishing about 50 feet from shore with his grandson, Jimmy Hugbey, 11, ap parently stood up in the boat when the boy started the engine and pitched into the water when the boat surged forward. The State Highway Patrol said the boy thought the boat motor was in neqtral gear but appatentr ty it was not With the engtaa's throttle wide open the boat birch ed wAMji forward, Har wood oat The Patrol said the boy threw a Ma bait i* Ha gran? lhar but 1 9 1 it failed to each him and Mr. Harwood sank In about 25 feet of water.
