Poge 2, The Carolina Indion Voice Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it, and. above all, accurately so they will be guided by its lights. EDITORIAL AND OPINION •Joseph Pulitzer i iVVVWWWVVVWWW I ASI » t SEE IT * Bnw* Butn ••••••••• A NEW DAY IS DAWNING... This is our last ' issue before theAugust 17, 1976 primary. What will be our headline next week? Will it be news as usual? Will Robeson County turn toosv turvy? Will it be in season be an Indian? A Black? A white? How will (he people respond to the challenge before us? We sim ply have to wait until next week to find out...but 1 do have some thoughts on the matter,,. A LAST LOOK AT DOUBLE VOTING... Double voting - is land soon will be was) an evil, and life robbing, political device put in place by a few power hungry and frightened men. As the South. Africans., and Southern Rhodesian Pa triots are finding out...num bers, as soon as the electorate is informed and aroused, will prevail every time. South Africa and Southern Rhodesia will have to share the power in their respective countries with their Black brethern. Or they will be forced to leave the country and look for another promised land. There can be no promised land by the deprivatit’O and denial of another human being, A land, a county, a -country is for sharing, a common destiny. One race of human beings cannot be allowed to run rampant over another. All men ate equal under the law. votVisg Rbbe- -son County was a basic denial of the Indian’s right to vote, to exist, to grow in spiritual strength and impart to his children that THEY ARE SOMEBODY! Na mote. than... anyone else...but certainly no less! Double voting declared ihat the Indian in Robeson County (whether he call him self a Lumbee or Tuscarora) was less than his white fellow Robesonian. The double vote denied the Indian the full impact of his vole, He was denied the full and undiluted strength of , his vote. The Indian vote was less than the white vote under the evil mandate of double voting. Double voting was the prac tice whereby residents in the • city school districts were al lowed to vote twice—in their own citv school board election and on the makeup of the. Robeson County Board of Education (where most of the Indian electorate resides), They voted twice. The Indians were only allowed to vote on the composition of the Robe son CountyBoard of, Educa- (ion. The Indians were only allowed to vote ONCE. Thanks be to God! A hearty and brave band of Indian parents took the matter to a federal court contending that the double vote deprived them of the full constitutional im- . pact of their vote. They said in. essence that their vote was lcs.s than the vote of the white in the city units. And it was. The jurists after a perusual of the matter in federal court- agreed. Double voting was outlawed beginning with the August 17 primary. May the people- Indian, Black and white- be granted the wisdom and foresight to insist that evil and nefarious, and life robbing, political devices like double voting never be allowed to flourish evily in our midst again. Let us learn the lesson of history and never treat one another in such an unseemly fashion again. Ever! Let u.s not forget the ’ landmarks like double voting along our journey through life but let us look ahead now to the future. Let us consider our children who, in many instan ces, have grown up not thinking well of themselves, because their Indian, Black and white elders did not tliink well of themselves. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOIJ) FOR US ALL? •••••••••« fostered unnatural feelings of condescension and superiority in the psyches of the whites in .. Robeson County. They thought they were the unchal lenged leaders of the rest of us. The whites, somehow, without the rest of us (Indians and Blacks) being any the wiser, instilled a societal par lor game called The Pecking Order among the three races— Indian. Black and white- in Robeson County. They, with out debate or dialogue, as sumed top rung on the societal ladder for themselves and left the Indian and Black to fight among themselves to decide who was number two and three. There should not have been a fight between the Indian and Black. Nol All men are created equal under the law. Oppor- ■ tunity, the fatHer of all enligh tened people, should have been for the taking, instead, the Indian and Black creativity and imagination was stifled and frustrated by denial and a wild and maddening scramb ling for the societal bones, the drippings from the affluent upper stratum-- the white component in Robeson Coun- • ty- Robeson County can be a , great county, a good slice of • America, a good place to live as long as no man is hampered in the pursuit of happiness because of the color of his skin, his Elizabethan slang, his cultural starvation diet. It is np to all of us to insure that we leave Roheson Ccnjnty a better place than we found it; if not, our living will have been in vain. Let us join hands August 17 ., and with .sound discretion, elect a tri- raciaT 'sIaie of candidates who can and will represent us all. BUT WE MUST PULL UP THE TARES OUT OF THE GARDEN OF ROBESON... Right now, at this very moment, as I write this conciliatory column, there is a white going about the county with a slate of candidates for the Robeson County Board of Education. He is insisting that two (and hopefully three) •• whites be elected to the 'Robeson County Board of Education on Tuesday. He is not playing fair and square with us. The white electorate in the Robeson County School District is less than 20 %. There are only nine •seats to be filled. How can he justify his goal? By encourag ing some Indians and Blacks to vote for less than nine candi dates on August 17-that is his only chance. I want all the people, all races, ail geographical areas in the county represented on the county board of education. Let’s vole for nine. I support the ad hoc committee to break double voting who have placed an advertisement in this news paper advocating that approa- - ch. It is sensible and fair and will insure that everyone is represented on'the'County board of education. I also agree that the nine member board of education would be represented fairly and sensibly with a racial break down of six Indians, two Blacks and one white. The racial breakdown of the pupil enrollment is 58% Indian, 22%Black and 20 % white. It should also be noted, when the white electorate in Lumberton was presented the opportunity to be magnani mous and fair in their recent city school board election, they turned out the Indian candi date. The Indian candidate finished last. But we want to be magna nimous and fair. One- is enough. That is a fair repre sentation of the pupil enroll ment in light of their less than magnanimous history. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Con And To the Editor: You know, the person to whom last week’s CIV editorial was directed at just may have had a point when he or she questioned the degree as well as the direction to which you, the editor of the CIV, have carried a number of your editorials. Who knows, maybe the person knows what they are talking about and where they are coming from. Is it possible that that person reads the pulse of the Indian people with a greater degree of accuracy than those heard from more frequently through' • the pages of the CIV? As for my somewhat militant self, I too sometimes question the approach. After all, deter mining the destiny of 30,000 Indian people is a matter of considerable magnitude, a matter which should be far removed from personalities or personal ambitions. Just possibly, no, for sure, you do have a valid question when you asked why copies of this rather lengthy letter were forwarded to a number of local Indians of considerable influ ence. At this point I am compelled to add that those receiving the letter were by no means the only Influencial Indians and neither is the writer of that letter the only spokesman for the Indian people of Robeson. Was the letter really necessary? No... but then I guess that is the personal style of those who wish Id let their influential' (sic) friends know where they The Pro Of if Double voting has been The first Indian and Black an ingrown, psychological toe was only appointed to the nail, an albotross around all of Robeson County Board of our necks. The evil system. Education in the early 60s. Dear Sir: I read with grea^ interest your’ July 29 edition of “As I See It.’’ After much medi tation over the letter you received and your response to it, I decided to write you and say thank you for letting us know now people are reacting to your personal opinion. 1 am happy to know that you are not the type to get upset and stop saying what has to be said, even if influencial people don’t like 'h. That letter had the strange sound of limbs breaking. It seems to me that certain people are on their way down and don’t like the feeling. I recognize that your. As I See It. is your opinion. As it does say “As I See It, by Bruce Barton.” Once in a great while, I disagree with the way you see it. 99 and 44/100 % of the time, however, I am in firm agreement with you. My only criticism is that you have to be alone when you say those things that have to be said for the betterment of us all. How many times have we, the grassroots people, needed one of our leaders to say exactly what you have been saying for four years? And how many times have they said it? Please continue to lead us, through the written word, and 1 will continue to follow. Until the CIV began 1 did not realize how many Indian leaders we had. Now every time I read the CIV. which is my main source of information because I have found your news coverage unbiased. I read about another Can you believe that? We hope that the 80% Indian, Black electorate will be fairer than ' that condescending, electoral slap in the face. It is also a fact of history that we (the Indian) were taught to feel inferior to the whites but superior to the Blacks in order to maintain the number two rung on the societal ladder. We were'misled. Second is, relatively speaking, even worse than third in psycholo gical terms. Educational Views Dy Dr. Dolton Brooks stand. The aforementioned letter eventually gave rise to the following..the reason for wri ting this letter...that reason being not so much to be critical of the editor for grinding his own axe on the reader’s time, but for a totally unrelated reason, that of asking this question..can you. the editor, honestly operate a business, a printing business, while at the same time publish and edit a newspaper and remain totally uninfluenced in your column when local Indians choose to frequStit' a priti'f shop "otHef '' than the one operated by you? I hesitate to ask such a question because the mere fact of asking it has its negative implications, but yet the question remains. Before 1 am accused of airing my laundry on the time of the CIV, 1 must add that you and the staff of the CIV are to be praised for providing a medium through which the word, right or wrong, can be carried. You are to be com mended for your efforts, The mere fact of your continued existence by necessity implies that even with the many heated controversies, you are doing some things, no... many things right. Three or four years do not a newspaper make. Time will determine whether or not your approach is the best. Sincerely, I Donald, Ldckleu Route 1 Pembroke, NC 28372 “big Indian.” After the July 29 As 1 See It, 1 have a couple of questions: Who is the author of that letter? What made him or her think he or she had the power to control the way you see it? If he or she can’t read, certainly he or she can see that snap shot of you. What other evidence does he or she need to see that your column is your personal opin ion? I have always been amazed at the unique method you have of taking youself out of a situation and giving us the facts. Thank you again for doing so. We have, as the old saying goes, too many chiefs and not enough Indians. 1, as one of the Indians, say thank you a thousand times. Try to ignore that letter because that is not the opinion of people. I don’t profess to speak for anyone except myself, how ever, I think the writer of that letter was way out of line. Does he or she live in Robeson? If so, he or she must be totally blind. A new day is approaching. Things are get ting better, but they still have a long long way to go. Keep up the outstanding work, and refer the author to me if he or she would like more detailed information about the lack of change in Robeson. Sincerely Yours, Brenda R. Jacobs Rt.2Box 316D Pembroke, NC 28372 It is important that Blacks be represented on the Robeson County Board of Education. If not, Indians can not be elected to offices in the years ahead. It is that simple. We need one another to survive in Robeson. As I see it, six Indians, two Blacks and one white would serve the best interest of our children. We hope everyone will exercise the hard earned right to vote August 17, See you at the polls! * According To Scripture Pro. 30:5 “Every word of God is pure; we today who are Christians need more than ever to rely on God’s word. I think of all these people today who are seeking office on the state and local level. So many times the people have been deceived by smooth talk, and in the end the poor are the ones to get hurt by their vote of choice. Or by one who someone has built up. Well you say that the only way you have of knowing the type of person you can trust is what you hear. Let’s see what God’s word says. What is a wicked man? He is a man in Proverbs 6; 13. “He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he toucheth with his fingers.” Ever notice those people on television? How they use their eyes when making a speech and when they finish they wink at you as if to say everything is alright. And when they are sitting they are continually crossing their legs. But when he thinks he’s making head way, he starts using his hands and fingers pointing in all directions, seeking their own desire. They really don’t care about people. All they want is a statue ’built in their honor. I believe with all my heart, we who elect these people who are unrighteous will answer to the Almight God. For we have his word to go by in Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” Look back at the wars. The young who gave all (their lives) because we were misled by somione wtio only loved themselves. Tou and I now know how we know these people. If you read this word you are as Paul said, “Inex cusable 0 man, for now you have heard the word. ” God’s word which is true. God intended from the beginning for the righteous to be in authority. Why? Poverbs 29:7 “The righte ous considereth the cause of the poor- the righteous are people of God, bom again children. When you elect people who are sinners, don’t expect anything in return except transgression, which is only to be increased for they are sinners who are still in dark ness, And we who are of the light, how shall we turn to darkness from the light? If they are not born again Christians, how can they lead the righteous. And to those of you who have fooled the people, the Lord said not 1 who so rewardeth evil for good, evil shall depart from their door (house). Proverbs 17:13. There are people today who have to pay dearly and some yet if they bring hardship to the people, without the fear of God in our lives, we will perish. I believe that trying to be a success in terms of acquiring prestige and wear ing certain badges leads to neuroticism, frustration, and unhappiness. Striving to be successful brings not only material success, but fulfill ment and happiness as well. Webster defines success as “the satisfactory accomplish ment of a goal sought for.” Continuous striving for a goal that is important to you as a result of your own needs, aspirations and talents brings success. All of us are goal- striving beings. Because we are built that way, we are not happy unless we are function ing as we are made to function-as goal strivers. Be ing happy and successful seem to go hand in hand At home I know of some really happy people and, to me, the most successful. Mr. William* Berry Strickland is a happy man. When he prays it seems like all of Heaven just comes down. Whereever I see him he smiles and, somehow, transmits that same feeling. Mr. Kernal Locklear seems to exhibit the epitomy of enthu siasm. At 70 he can jump the highest of any man I know— he should have entered the Olympics in Montreal! He seems to be so successful and quite happy. 1 really believe these two men exemplify success—not a prestige factor, but the manifestation of a self image that transcends the social, environmental, and cul tural factors that seem to stifle creativity and force many people to failure. CONCLUSION Being successful is exper iencing success. Our present state of self confidence and poise is the result of what we have experienced. Since most of us have experienced failure, it will take a lot of undoing to find success. I believe one way is to observe people who are happy and successful and learn from them. Other ways to remove the scars, dis tortions and blemishes would be to strive with all of your talents and strength that you can give. Dalton P. Brooks Executive Secretary Title IV Advisory Council Know Your Bible By Rev. D.F. Lowry We hear much preaching about hell. The word hell has many positions. Hell was in the whale for Jonah. Hell often means the grave. See Acts 2 Verse 3! saying Christ’s soul was not left in hell. The Patriarch David is still in hell and will remain there until the first Resurrection. Christ came out the third day. Read Acts 2:27, Psa. 16:10. All this preaching about going to heaven or going to hell is purely TRADITION. The Bible tells us that no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven, even Christ. Read John 3:13. Wake Up!! At the first Resurrection the dead in Christ will arise first and the living Christians will be changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye and be caught up to meet the Lord in. the air. There, in the ait will be the most delicious meal ever served- millions and millions eating together. After the marriage supper in the air we’ll all come with God and Christ to the Mt. of Oiives where Christ ascended up to return to heaven. Logic tells us that the new earth will have as many square miles on its surface as the present earth existing. The existing earth is 25,000 sq. feet in circumference, contains 197 square miles on its surface. Our present earth is that of an oblate spheroid but the scripture points out an earth with four coumers. Logically, the new earth being square with the same area surface would stand with a dimension of approximately 14,100 miles square. Accordingly, the Angel coming from the East could talk to the four Angels standing on the four corners of the earth ordering them to hold the winds and not let them blow until he sealed the servants of God in their fourheads. The New Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven will be 14,000 furlongs wide, long and high. 14000 furlongs each way-8 furlongs equal a mile, hence the new Jerusalem will be 1500 miles each way. My! What a city with golden streets 1500 miles long with chariots of gold running up and down on these golden streets. Thank God you won’t get there before 1 do. Should you there ahead of me, you would have a seniority over me and want to guide me around in the Golden City. We’ll all go there together. We are not speculating about the size of the New City for the Bible says it will be 140(X) furlongs each way. Now, 14000 furlongs divided by 8 furlongs in a mile we arrive at 1500 each way. Now let’s speculate a whjle, assuming the new earth has four corners with a surface same as the present earth it would be about 14 thousand miles square and if the New Jerusalem came down just above the new earth and placed over the center of the new earth with a hypotenuse equally distant from the North Corner of the New Jerusalem to the North Corner of the new earth and thus fixed at all four corners- what a beautiful picture. Thus: 14,000 miles sqnaro Should this be true the people all c- '• ihe new earth could look thru the transji.ircni glass and see what’s going on inside the new city. Revelations 21:1 points this our. Doug May nor John 15:7 "if ye in me and my words in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you." Mark 11:24 "Therefore I say unto you. what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.” Today I want to speak, by writing, on the power of consecrated prayer. Jesus Christ said if He abides in us and His word is in us. then our prayers wilt be answered. But as the case is that we pray stereotyped prayers that sound so pretty but we only mouth the words. Praise the Lord. That’s why we have so much trouble with life. That’s why we always call the doctor before we call Jesus. Amen. We ought to call them both. God still performs miracles even though most churches don’t teach that He does. God still blesses his children. Amen. If Jesus abides in you, then He will be the first one you go to. Amen. If you’re sick vou ask Jesus to heat you, He will; Nwhere in the Bible does it say thai He won’t. All it takes is that old-time prayer of faith.Amen. If you have a need, then believe and you shall receive. Amen. Jesus promised it. I thank God for the prayers of faith that the saints of God have offered up in my behalf. I can literally see the results. Amen. God is not slack in keeping His promises. but many of us are slack m our faith. And that it exactly where it is at. Maybe you have been taught that the age of miracles is past. How can Jesus save a soul? How can He call a man to go out and to preach the gospel except by miracle? We need to break with the. religionist traditionalism that bind, blind, and confuse men. Amen. We need to believe God wrote the word so that we can understand it. Amen. God will reveal His words to those that abide in His son, Jesus Christ. Let me relate an experience; It was a Sunday afternoon and I was about enjoying a won derful dinner when it hit me. My blood pressure went up and I went out. All that time, when I was unable to pray for myself, my pastor offered up to God a prayer for my healing. And I came out of it. 1 know that the power of consecrated prayer works. Maybe there is someone reading this message that one day the Lord saved you. but over the years you drifted from the fold. And you want to come back. I’m praying that you will ask God’s forgiveness. I am a God-called minister and I have a job to do. If you need help or you need to talk to or pray with someone, then you call me. I will come. Rev. Dong Maynor Pembroke, NC REFLECTIONS Dy Alro Oxendine SHARE A SMILE TODAY I have discovered that even a toothless grin like mine can suddenly light up another person’s eyes. Those eyes may belong to a little boy who has just fallen and skinned his feels there is little left for her in life. No matter who we are, when we see that someone else really cares about us, we feel good inside. Over the years so many people have shared a smile with me that I want to “pass it on” to those I meet. Home is the hardest place for me to keep on smiling. Ther are so many unfinished jobs to be done, so many upsets to plans, and such a shortage of energy that I usually end up wearing a frantic'frown for the very ones I love the most. And my voice is even harsher. So I’m trying to remember to carry out this motto: “Put a SMILE in your voice. Keep a SMILE on your face.” Surely our homes can be happier if we think to "share a smile” with our loved ones, today. MRS. EVA LEE JACOBS It’s hard to realize that Mrs. Eva Lee is gone. Her summer tutor, Ms. Bonnie Sampson, a Summer Youth Worker in the literacy program, was ready to start Mrs. Eva on a new Laubach reading book when she learn ed that Mrs. Eva had passed away. 1 am grateful to have known Mrs. Eva. Her diligence in taking advantage of her chan ce to develop her skills, as an adult, was an inspiration to all of us who worked with her. Now, Mrs. sarah, who is back home from Nevada, is replacing her sister as one of Bonnie Sampson’s summer students. 4V.M . Dial 52I -4m>5
