for Tribal Chairman

Jimmy Coins as the new Tribal
Chairman. Unofficial votes show
lie defeated Dr. Ruth Dial Woods
by 86 votes. Goins received a
total of 2639 and Woods received
2553. Others ninning for Tribal
Chair were Rev Jerry McNeill
who received 795 votes; Lee
Edward Sampson received 245;
and Juaniia Strickland received
99 votes
The election for 21 council seats
showed some changes. A list of

Public Health Service Captain
Atlanta. GA-Eflcctivc October 1. 2003. Annie Bray boy Fair was promoted
to the rank of Captain (06) in the United States Public Health
Services (USPHS) Capt Fair currently serv es in the U.S. Department
of health and Human Serv ices. Office on Women's Health, in Atlanta.

A promotion ceremony was held July 1. 2003 in Atlanta at the Centers
for Disease Control and Prev ention (CDC) The ceremony was led by
Read Admiral J Jarrctt Clinton who serves as regional health administrator
and assistant surgeon general. Dr. Clinton, who oversees
health and wellness for the eight southeastern states, provided introductory
comments and administered the statement of the oath of
office to the promoted personnel
"Capt Fair has demonstrated exceptional skills and energy." said
Clinton.. "I'm very very pleased for her promotion to this senior officer
level."
Capt Fair, a member of the Lumbcc Indian Community in Pembroke,
North Carolina, was commissioned December 1. 1986 after receiving
two master's degrees (Master of Public health and Masters of SocitS
Work) from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She
began her career with the Indian Health Services while stationed with
the Gila River Indian Community and the Phoenix Indian Medical
Center in Arizona, respectively.
Serv ing in her role as the regional women's health coordinator for
Region IV, which includes the eight Southeastern states (Alabama.
Florida. Georgia. Kentucky. Mississippi. North Carolina. South
Carolina and Tennessee). Capt. Fair serves in a vital leadership role
geared to advancing the health status of women across the lifespan.
She trav els extensively throughout the southeast and to Wasltington.
D C. to promote women's health activities and initiatives.
Specifically, she works with the states to increase awareness of
women's health and assist communities in developing strategies to
address health issues such as diabetes, health disease. HIV/AIDS and
domestic violence
"I am truly committed to my career in the U.S> Public Health Service
and I am honored to receive litis promotion," said Fair, who earned
Iter undergraduate degree in psychology from UNC Pembroke. "Tlx:
U.S. Public Health Service has prov ided me with experiences and
opportunities that arc very gratify ing. I expect to continue this journey
throughout my career"

Hunt and 164 for Low ry.
Incumbent town councilincn.
Greg Cummings and Larry
McNeill outdistanced their challengers
Cummings received 325
and Keith Jacobs received 152.

Powwow Saturday. I happcncdl
upon this young man in one of
the vendor's booths I noticed
that lie had a calendar with a lot
of beautiful Native American
women on it.
As 1 looked closer at the calendar.
I couldn't help but notice the
the title of the calendar..".Native
Visions of the Lumbee Women ."
This was definitely a man's calendar!
We chatted for a while and an
appointment was set for him to
come by the office.
I was amazed at tliis young man's
talent and his eye for photography
He lias captured the beauty of
some of the most attractive
young ladies in our area and his
calendar shows liis good taste
and talent.
He expressed to 111c that
Miss Lumbee. Morgan B Hunt,
inspired him to do the calendar
Not only did slic inspire him. but
she was helpful in finding models
for him
He certainly has an album of
beautiful women in his calendar
and tastefully done
