WIA Update
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) which is administered by
the Lumbee Regional Development Association (I.RI)A) is currently
in its first year of a hvo-year designation by the United States
Department of Labor.
The program serves Indian and Native A ntericans in J.RDA's des"ignored
sendee area which includes Robeson, Scotland, Hoke and
Bladen Counties. The purpose of the program is to truin and/or
employ participants to be more competitive in the labor force.
William E. Locklear. WIA Director, serves on the National Indian
and Native American Advisory Council and represents other Indian
grantees in the Southeast. Recently while attending an advisory
council meeting in Washington, D.C. he had an opportunity to meet
with the Secretary of Labor, Elaine Chan along with the Assistant
Secretary Emily S. De Rocco. The ride of the council is to advise the
secretary of issues relative to employment and training programs.

Chickhominy powwow
to be held April 30
February 20,2005 - Charles City, vA - In a joint announcement, six
Virginia Indian nations announced that they will gather on the
Chickahominy Tribal Grounds in Charles City, Virginia; April 30 and
May 1st for their 3rd annual joint spring Pow-Wow/Gathering On
this historic occasion, members of the Chickahominy. Eastern
Chickahominy, Monacan, Nansemond. Rappahannock and Upper
Mattaponi tribes will give honor to their past, as they recognize the
historic impact of Jamestown 1607.
Grounds open at 10:00 a m on both days, with the Saturday, April
30 Grand Entry at 12:00 noon and Sunday's Grand Entry at 1:00 p m
The festival/Pow-Wow will feature Native American dancers, drummers,
singers and cultural demonstrations Marvin J "Many Horses'
Burnette will return as Master of Ceremonies Bumette. a career veteran
and enrolled member of the.Rosebud Sioux Dakota, is nationally
known for his traditional dancing and service as "MC" for many
traditional pow wows Burnette, who was raised on the Pine Ridge
Indian Reservation, brings honor to his culture and historic commentary
to the attending public, as he leads traditional pow wows
Native American crafters from all over the United States will have
jewelry, pottery, beadwork, leather crafts, and other authentic arts
and crafts for sale Food will be available and will feature Indian Fry
Bread, hamburgers and hot dogs, and more, as well as plenty of
beverages and a bake sale
The festival is open to the public. Gate admission $5 66/adults, and
$3 00/children ages 6 and under and senior citizens Proceeds will
support VITAL, the Virginia Indian Tribal Alliatfce for Life VITAL is
an organization of members of the Chickahominy, Eastern
Chickahominy. Monacan, Nansemond, Rappahannock, and Upper
Mattaponi Indian Nations

Biggs Park and Child Care Directions will again be co-sponsoring

SRMC Gala raises $54,000 for
diabetes treatment, education
Proceeds from the Rhapsody in Blue gala at the Pinecrest Country
Club on Friday evening hosted by the Southeastern Regional Medical
Center Foundation will go a long way to help Robeson County
residents with diabetes One of the fastest growing medical problems
in our country today, diabetes hits local citizens especially hard
State statistics for 1909-200.1 show that Robeson County has an ageadjusted
death rate from diabetes almost twice the rate for the state
as a whole
About 400 guest danced the ev ening away at the 11th annual SRMC
Foundation black-tie event Because of their support, the Diabetes
Community Center, located at 4300 Fayetteville Rd . will be able to
purchase special equipment to assess patients before complications
from diabetes occur, according to Dr Mary Black, director of the
center, who thanked supporters at the gala She added that the $54,000
raised at this year's gala will also continue the center's education
efforts to increase awareness in the community about this disease
that sometimes affect people for years before diagnosis
"We have made great p ogress since the center opened in 1999.
but we still hav e a long way to go." Black said "Please know that
your support tonight will make a difference in the future "

Huggins along with the hospital's CEO Luckey Welsh and wife L.ibby.

to the music'of the Bill Bolen Band of Chapel Hill Nineteen other
couples volunteered to serve on the gala committee with the Davis
Huggins couples
Gala decorations carried out the "rhapsody in blue" theme with an
array of pieces of blue and white china vases, bowls and urns borrowed
from the Foundation volunteers Each piece of china held
white flowers of many varieties?from roses to daisies?with greenery.
