HREENSBOUO DAILY NEWS, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 192! 10 if II 1 1 1 ! 9 ! CLASS Work On New Structure Will Begin March 1 Three Stor ies and Fireproof. BUILDING COSTS FALLING Itofrlil lo DilH !tt Chapol Hill, Nov. 20. Members of the executive committee and t li building committee of Ihe university trustees have just, held here In Presi dent Chase's office their most Impor tant meetings In many months. It wax called for the purpose of discussing the hulldlna- situation to review what had been done already and to decide upon the course construction to follow within the next year. It Is announced that the two com mittees. Jointly, authorized a, class room building, fireproof tnd throe stories high. Construction upon this, tliii fifth large building to he author ized, will begin March 1 and will be finished before the opening of the fall session of 1D22. Tho four dormitories upon which a start has already been made will be finished August 1. 1'resent at the meeting were Col . J. Bryan Orimes, Dr. Richard J. bewls, MaJ. John W. llrahiim. W. N. Kverctt, lr Charles Lee Smith, .John Wprunt Hill, Haywood I'urkor, Henry London. 1'rcsldent Chase, Dr. W. C. Coker, and Charles T. Woollen, business manager of the University. "We have certainly,-taken the plus out o( the cost of building at Chapel Hill" one of the committeemen .said after the meeting. "We nre not In clined to boast, but 1 feel that we have done a piece of work. In prosecut ing the building plans, of which wi . ,,uv well he nroud." The two committees got from the architectural and engineering experts a full report upon resuns uu i achieved. One outstanding accomplish ment Is that the cost of housing stud ents In fireproof dormitories has been brought down to Il.uuu per siuoeni ihan half Its cost In the dorml- irv erected two years ago, and only II SO a student more than In a non flrenroof dormitory erected 10 yearf auo at a time when building costl ier, itcnerally a third lower than to iinv And members of the committee fmiii..e with the cost of house con structlon said they felt confident that ii,. frame dwellings erected were built more cheaply than they couli huve been- built anywhere else in th suite. r It was the committees original In ...nilnn to snend the summor In com- nietins- nrellmlnary and scattered i.niidinir' obcratlons necessury at - siurL and to begin, work, on the large i..,. h,,n,iii, iri lii the fall. It was nlanncd when the contract was sign 17 in build during the sum- inrn uhnr camDS and eight rest .,,. Th. have been built and . ncciinied. In addition, Memorial hall has been -nnum-ied Into a serviceable auditorium r ..hRiiel bv correction otlts ., i Aerecia. and It will have adequate heating aystem within a few days. An emergency water supply has been constructed and has been In use since October I from a source a mile and a half from tha campus. About two mllea of water pipe have been laid in the streets. Blx -four-room bun galowa, which, with the eight resi dences first authorised, maks a .tota of 14 residences eracted since the mid dle of July, to meet the dtfflcul housing situation, have been built Many miner repairs - and extensions have been carried through. On such a multitude of scattered Jobs soma Inevitable delays were ex perienced, said members of tha com mittees, but operations have gone steadily forward without the loss of f single work day. Tha construction ol tha railroad Is now In Its final stages, the laying of the rails having begun. This task has proven considerably mora difficult than was anticipated, since great quantities of rock ha'-e . been encountered, and blasting, be cause of the houses near the rlght-of- -- -wsav toss been slow and troublesome." Two of the four dormitories aulh ' orlsed are at present under construc tion. There li a difference of less than a week between the actual progress on these and the progress schedule or- ialnally laid down. These dormltorlci are scheduled In such a way that each will resVh a given stage of construe tlon a month to six weeks later than the one preceding It, thereby keeping the working force practically uni form all the tlma. The buildings wll house 125 students each, two stud, ante to a room. The entire building program has been deliberately so spac ed as to be finished In the spring o 1923. a stesdy now of work being maintained throughout In the Interest of economy.
