Northern l aclfio sold at a new high level for I he present upward movement, al though a reaction was caused by doubt as t whether the extra disbursement would he In stock or cash. Weakness of a special character made Its appearance in International J'npnr. There was also free selling of Mexican Petroleum on the announce ment that 40,0110 shares of stock out standing and Issued would be listed on the exchange. The slump, however, was succeeded by a quick rally In this case. Standard Oil of New Jersey ran up more than nine points to a new . .high level for the present upward movement, and this flurry caused Im mediate buying of the oils. Depression that put In appearance on the open ing In the cotton market today was In force the session through and the close was at the lowest of the day, at net losses of 48 to 67 points. January traded as low as 16.40 and July fell to 16.00 cents. Larger crop estimates were the main cause of .the selling and during the period of heaviest selling, toward the end of the day, it was mar ket gossip that Wall Street and Chi cago interests were furnishing much of the pressure. The main bear arguments were a private crop estimate ot 7,989,000 bales and the statement of the federal re serve board that the indications wsre for a crop in excess of 8,000,000 bales, whloh was regarded by many traders as a warning of what might ba expect ed on December 12 when the depart ment of agriculture makes its annual crop estimate. Liverpool was very poor and helped to make a weak opening here but at tar declines of 28 to 31 points there was a recovery back to within 9 to 14 points on ths weather map, which noted a great deal of rain In the west ern belt, especially In Texas. This was regarded as a highly bullish develop ment as messages from Texas said that the rain meant that planting ot grain would go ahead, thereby Increasing the chances of holding down ths acre age undsr cotton next spring. After January touched 18.35 the mrket had no more recuperative power and a steadv dsclina aet in. although much comment of a bullish nature was aroused by telegrams from Dallas say ing that cotton eraed lnfeoted by the ?lnk boll worm had been shipped to 5 points in Texas. BOND DEPARTMENT Wachovia Bank & Trust Company Winston-Salem POST rtAGO COTTON LETTER. w.nr Vnrk. Dec. 1. The cotton trade continues to Bhow no more than a perfunotory interest ana wnai oemanu there is comes largely from covering by scalping shorts. Advices from Dal las said that the pink boll worm had been found in seed shipped to 72 sta tions in Texas and Oklahoma. If It Is assumed that this is going to have no Influence on planting for next crop we should be glad to know what those would plant who hold such a view If they were Texas farmers and knew that weevil damage Is Inevitable and that the damage from the new pest might be almost anything if once started. Our guess would be that Texas will see the most variegated crops next season In her history. There Is, however, no lift to the mar ket at tne present ana wnne it goes down slowly it still goes down and is likely to continue until some one wants some cotton. For the time being those who believe as ws do that cotton Is worth more money and will bring It in due course are not getting much en couragement 'from day to day develop ments and must simply bids their time and try to pick off a plum or two now and then when they look pretty ripe. Spot advices are deep blue and lament the lack of demand. Holders however seem not to be 'pressing any cotton for sale and declines for the most part represent an Increase in the specula tive short account though as always there Is some hedging and a little scattering liquidation from time to time which In its present condition the market is not able to absorb without giving way. The next ginning report is due on Thursday and is expected to establish a new low record for the period. Exports 20,000 bales. It Is a narrow market sensitive to small or ders either way but for the present In clined to sag for lack' of support and buyers however conflndent of future advances should pick out the easy spots and not expect too much at pres ent.
