It. The cotton market was rather less active today and fluctuations were irregular. An early advance on better British trade advices met a great deal of realising and after selling at 14.17 or If points net higher, December .broke to 24,00 There was s recovery to nearly the earlier high level during the middle of the afternoon, but It was not fully' maintained with December closing at 14.11 and with the general market closing steady, net five points lower to one point higher. The market opened steady st a de cline of two points on December, hut generally three to flye points higher on ths relatively steady Liverpool cables. There appeared to be quite a few overnight aelling ordera around the ring, brought In by the reactions of yesterday afternoon, but they were soon absorbed, and the early buying moving carried prices 17 to SI points net higher with January selling at 14.14 and-March at 14.20. Profit tak ing .became more active on this ad vance and seemed to be promoted by reports that after having bought very freely for the past few weeks, the demsnd from domestlo mills was falling off. There was also scattered southern selling on the .-reaction which carried January contracts off to II. II or about four to nine points net lower on the active months. The continued bullish average of aouthern spot advices seemed to encourage buying on this decline and there was a sharp rally during the early after noon on a renewal of local support and-covering by early sellers, but the market was rather unsettled In the late trading and closing prices were within a point or two of yesterday's Anal quotations on the active months. The monthly crop report of a local authority tndlcated a deterioration of eight-tenths of 1 per cent In the con dition for the month snd estimated that per cent of the erop had been picked. Private cables from Liver pool reported spinners' calling with a better business In Manchester at steady prices. Mon. Open. High. Low. Close.
