New York, Nov. II. Today' mar ket during moat of the session wit nessed a continuation of the selling movement which was, eo pronounced on Saturday. Pressure did not relax until alone; In- the afternoon .when fait buying of some of the ooppers and strength in a few of the specialties gave a suggestion that support was forth coming and that It might extend to other portions of the market. Very little news bearing on the flnanoial or market situation was In clrculajjon. The selling appeared to be inspired by unfavorable conclu sions drawn from Tuesday's election, and the radical legislation that might be expected later on, while the Turk ish situation was regarded with a certain amount of uneasiness. Never- spect to thm passage of a soldiers' bonus bill, revival of excess profits tax and Injurious modification of the Esoh-Cummins transportation act con stitute the basis for the pessimism that seems once more to have taken hold of the trading fraternity. 1 I Lonui r ra u 1 .uu rciiciii ....... - aoter to single out Individual issues, although the weakness in the ship ping shares mlgtit be set down ts the belief that the prospects for the pas sage of a subsidy bill are far from bright. The liquidation that Is going on apparently is only In small part for the account of the outside public and Is believed to be more in the na ture of reduction of commitments by pools and sncalled Insiders. Early In the day, the selling fever appeared to have struck the cotton market, but trade support was so strong In the first hour that a vigor ous rally developed before the mid dle of the afternoon. There are several Indications of a Unarked improvement In the coal sup fply situation. One Is the discontinu ance of railroad reports on coal load ings, and the other Is a statement by the geological survey that fully 12,000,000 tons were added to the stocks of consumers in September tnd October. MONITOR'S WAIA STREET GOSSIP. (Br Laiaad Win to Ditlr Km.) (OwrlfM, lilt, tar PtllMjtlpbu robllc leker.l New York, Nov. 18. Cerro de Pasco staged a sharp rally today fol lowing talk of a resumption of divi dends and strength in this issue en couraged support of most of the other eopper stocks. Cerro is apparently in very good shape and qualified as lead er of the overdue movement In the coppers. American Car and Foundry busi ness Is holding up very well, and un filled orders on the books of the com- Ssny at the present time total about 78,000, 000. With all Indications avorlng a continuation of the pres ent strong demand for equipment, It Is considered probable that earnings for the year will be well over fit per share on the common. Otis Steel's business during October was exceptionally good, and as a mat ter of fact, totalled more than the entire second quarter. Earnings dur ing the month were at an annual rate exoeedlng preferred dividend require ments. With all of the company's plants, excepting one, In operation, the outlook for the balanoe of the year at least Is very satisfactory. Germany and France are again buy ing large quantities of American cop per, while demand from other foretan countries Is also picking up. It Is estimated that sales for overseas shipment during the last two business aay, exoeeaeo e.ooo.ooo pound ana ac cording to Information received in local copper circles. It Is believed that tneprice trena is again turning up i Crude rubber prices are again on aha. advance, and with snot storks quoted at 24 cents today, the market Is nearly I cents up from the low level reached last week. London la holding very firm as a result of the restriction pians success i so tar, ana this haa Imparted a strong tons to the local market. Proof that the movement of both anthracite and bituminous coal has reached normal proportions Is given hy the discontinuation of the Issuance of dally coal loading reports by the American Railway association. Despite the denial made two or three weeks ago by A. H. Harris, of Chrysanthemums All Colera All Prloes .. , Summit Are. Greenhouses the New York Central, that the road was considering the Issuance of pre ferred stock, this report haa persist ed. As a matter of fact, the directors have not even discussed the possi bility. Another report which has been granted credence la some quarters tor he Dast several weeks concerns the dividend rate, It being declared that directors were considering an in crease from five per, cent, to six per cent per year. It Is reported that this move would have been made earlier had It not been for the expensive strike of railway shopmen during the summer. The fact that the Pennsyl vania has restored Its dividend to the old standing may lend some color to the New York Central report. If any such aotion Is considered. It will probably be discussed at the Decern- Der meeting. Atchison car loadings during the week ended November 10 totalled 38. 00 cars aa compared with but 28,734 cars during the same week a year ago. uoauinas on tne Burlington during the first week In November were 41,Z4 cars, tnis comparing with 15,878 cars during the corresponding week last year. Utah failed to respond to the bet ter sentiment regarding the coppers today despite the fact that the eharp break In this stock last week should have called for more than the one quarter point advance which was made, upon technical ground If noth ing else. The porphyries will soon Issue their third quarter reports and it Is understood that Utah should show considerable Improvement over the second quarter. The copper busi ness has imoreved to an extent where -traders are discussing the prospects m l a dividend declaration of some sort on Nevada soon alter tne turn or tne year. United Retail Stores was strong to day, especially In the early trading when the stock crossed 76 on heavy busying. This support was explained by the action of the directors In de claring a cash dividend of $2 per share, this disbursement being made in addition to a special distribution of United Retail Stores holdings of United Retail Candy stock. The news was -out about noon and following this there was enough profit-taking to make moderate inroads upon the morning gains. MONITOR. C. B. EVAT9 CHICAGO I.KTTEH. How can world repair go on if tne spirit tnere ex nressea is to db maae into monu ments to dictate present policies and to eduoate the young of coming gen erations? 7 Contrast this with the action of Argentina and Chile, whose people, tired of the conflicts which had gone on between those two nations, placed a bronze statue of Jesus Christ on the boundary line between the two countries, towering among the Andes and In Its meaning greater than the heavens themselves. And men we nave little or the effects of bad traditions and mental habits of thousands of years. But so much of the meaning of these advantages as might be possible to Europeans should be held up to the ylew of Europeans. The one grand lesson Is that of a return to simpler life. Abandonment of all covetousness of the posses sions of others, liquidation of all ex cessive liabilities by the bankruptcy process nere necessary acceptance, for the time being at least, of all present forms of government, and a new start with man and land, and railroad and market. Yes, this all seems like coaxing a temptest to halt, a lunatic to become sane, a dying tree to become a sap ling again, but we must not cease trying for better things even though the ohoicest Dart of the earth Home- times seems sinking Irretrievably into a state of savagery, rendered more savage through the tools cre ated by civilisation.
