Burtner post of the Amer ican legion, held at the legion head quarters last night, a commute of Ave me a waa named by - Commander Jack Stevens to nomtnat certain per sona at the December meeting for the offlcee of commander and vice commander for the coming year. Those on the committee are B. , T. Baynes. O. G. Merrltt. W. T. Grime- ley, W. B. Clement and John T. Bal-lou. Thus far the matter of a new com mander has not been discussed to any great extent In legion circles. The name of Dan MoLeod has been men tioned, but Mr. McLeod Is leaving the city soon after the first of December to accept a position elsewhere. Quite a bit of discussion held the Interest of the legion. The body went on record aa commending the officers of the legion who handled the case of Cape Billy McKensle. and tt was also stated that the post has offered to send the wife of the man back to her, home In Iowa. The legion voted, the commander the power to appoint a committee to co-operate with the other organisa tion of the city which are trying to get football games here next year. That committee will be named' short- Jy, and the main effort Is to arrange for the Carollna-V. M. I. game to be played In Greensboro next year. One of the most active movements taken last night waa the definite step toward the organisation of an Amer ican legion bahd here. McDanlel Lewis was named aa chairman of a committee which will make a thor ough Investigation of the prospects lor a band. A committee was also named to In vestigate the chances of getting op a basketball team to enter th tourna ment at th T. U. C A. Several mem bers expressed enthusiasm over the basketball suggestion and several persons are already working on the plan. The question of a memorial In the form of an athletic field and play ground was mentioned by the com mander: Although the matter has been discussed 'teely In unofficial circles, little attention waa paid It last night The legion voted a resolution of ap preciation to the program commit tee, of which Norman Boren was chairman, on the Armistice day cele b rations. A note was read from Mrs. Jack Stevens In which ah thanked the members of the legion for the gift they sent on her wedding day. Com mander Stevens added to that with his personal appreciation for the thought of the men with whom' he had been so closely associated for the past year.
