By BUD FISHER By Industrials As Week Opens Points of Firmness Throughout the Llsta Contributed By To baccos, Sugars and Oils Striking Feature of the Market Is the Strength Developed By the Pound Sterling. N 1 (Br um win to Din? Km.) (Cowrlibt. 1821. bf mivblpbl FuUU Lftlfir. i New York. Not. 7.2-Irresulartt7 of prlc movement and oonfuslon of sen timent once mor stood out con spicuously In th market, and It must ' bo admitted that the opening eeeilon of the week brought ho clarity ot opinion nor any deolded conviction ae . , to the Immediate future, True. In the Induatrlale there was a continu ance of the selling, movement which developed. In euch promising fashion for the beare on Saturday, The' mere ' fact that It wa not uniform and that aeveral group and many Issues gave a suggestion of resistance, failed to deter the sellers from operating with vigor In those portions of the market where their attacks met with success. Bteels, equipments, rails and spe cialties furnished the most ready response to pressure, and the ease with which United States Steel receded practically to par prevented any resurgence ot optimism. Baldwin at one time broke with considerable vlolenoe, and American Locomotive also was heavy. Apprehension ot the polloy that may be adopted by the federal trade commission In response to the BetuJehem-lilAvaU merger was given ss ' one of the occasions for selling of the steels. Railroad shares moved Irregularly, with a tew examples of steadiness offset by heaviness In the majority of Issues, There was little In the assort ment of October 'reports on earnings to provid a cue for the selling. Some j of the statements were surprisingly ( KOod. Atchison showed van actual y'", and Baltimore and Ohio appar- jT ently was much better tharr expected. The' reports generally were marked liy substantial .gains In gross, with the net seriously curtailed by the al lowances for strike expenses. No defi nite conclusion can be -obtained from the October showing, and It probably will take the evidence fur nished by November to afford a Just appraisal of the condition of the na tion's purveyors qf transportation. 1'olnts of firmness throughout the list were contributed by the tobaccos, sugars and oils. The sugar industry seems definitely on the upgrade, while the liquidation In the petro leum group most assuredly warrants the expectation1 of recovery on tech nical grounds alone. Rhort covering was actively under way "in General Asphalt and California Petroleum. The striking feature of the ex changes was the advance in sterling to the new high level of 14.62, the peak since the post-war decline got well under way. Continental ex changes did not share In this display of strength. There Is nothing, how ever, in tho movement of European exchanges tn indicate. nvthtu more than speculative operations. Call money, after rrnewlngat 4 8-4, eased to four. In street opinion there Is no cunslsteocy in a reserve ratio of 82.9 os recorded by the New York federal reserve bank last week, and the synchronous claim of over-extended brokerage loans. ; MONITOR'S WALL STREET. There has been so much talk of Increased dividends and possible new stock Issues by this road for the past several months that iny such move is bound to quicken cariosity. A. H. Smith has Just returned from abroad, and the ( coming meeting la a hold over meeting,-from the one proposed during .' his absence. As far as Increased dividend prospects are concerned, It is said In quarters very close to con trolling Interests of the road that the rate will be Increased to six per cent at the December meeting. In view of the heavy maintenance charges which this road and all others are now meeting, and also be cause ef the possibilities ot Ignorant legislation by the coming Congress, It Is pot considered exceptionally good politics at this time to Increase the dividend even to the 86 basis. If any Increase should be decided upon, it Is hardly likely that it wU exceed a 86 annual return. The recent heavy liquidation In stocks based, as It was. upon the apparent threat of pool liquidation, lias undoubtedly strengthened the technical position of the market. However, removal of some proportion of the Overhanging long Interest and substitution of an Increased short , Interest Is beneficial In an abstract isense. A more concrete analysis of 'the market reveals a certain weak ness in marginal requirements. naiurauy tne arive against pslces has reduced margins appreciably, and In such cases there has usually been a certain amount of forced selling due , to this osjuee. Optimism on the sugar stocks 1s proving to have been well founded, and the tall end of the old crop Is be ing sold on a constantly advanolng market. Follwlng the sale of 45,000 bsgs st four cents c. EVAN'S CHICAGO LETTTEH, , , t 11 Umi Win to DiU, Kml (Cosrriibt. ma. br noufcipbia puwjt utt.) ..,?!".?5,,.Nor- 27 When one hears that 850,000,000 has been Invested In experimentation with the automatic telephone In ona tnrm and the thing has been practically scrapped, he suspects that this Is an exaggeration. Nevertheless he gets a new Impression of the amount of ability and work that are devoted to Improvements by sclentlflo men and skilled mechanics. The automatic devices are now pronounced useful on a small seals but when applied to systems In larga cities or even In villages of moder ate size are declared not to work well. In four or five states of ths west where the newest appliances In the automatic have been tried the authorities have ordered the equip ment out and modern switchboards put in. The switchboards have a large human element In them, nota bly the brain and the skilled fingers of the operaters, but Investigators of these things, have found out that you cannot take a piece of steel, put It somewhere and tell It to do some thing with the certainty that It will' obey you. It is understood that the big telephone Interest has ordered the manufacture' of these automatlo devices to cease This Is the more disappointing in view of the Intense attention, barked up by abundant capital, that has been given to this subject especially In the past two or three years. Such a waste as this gives one a painful Impression, and yet It Is not all waste. You have to go 'through a lot of useless earth before you get to the gold In the mine, and the number of devices for all sorts of purposes that have found their plaoes In the cata combs of the patent office gives one a record of the failures In man's his tory. But we are habitually almost un conscious of the lives of mllllns of Inventors and their products which we are constantly using. We talk, listen, eat, ride and think not of "their long days of labor and nights devoid of ease." , A new switchboard If coming, In deed already has started on Its way which It Is claimed, by competent men will revolutionize the telephone service, making I even more of a wonder than it Is Is today. As com pared with the cost of ths automatlo to ths companies, this newcomer will be half or perhaps even a fifth In overhead besides dispatching the business In emergencies where ths automatic drops dead. No, there will not be anything of this device on the market In the shape of capital stock, tor everything In that line has been provided for. We shall buy It In ths shape of greater convenience in talking to one another over miles or hundreds of miles. It is the same with a lot of othsr new dleooverles In sclenos -and mechanics. The Standard Oil com panies have a large force of chem ists at work all the time making new things or Improvements In old things and new discoveries in a drop of dirty oil. Our participation In those discoveries takes the form of., a purchase of a Standard Oil stock at several hundred dollars a share. It Is the same with Corn Products. When the Corn Products Refining company In Its original form, that la a glucose company, was organlssd, one of the first things In the per sonal equipment' was a body of chemists, and ws are licking their Angers when wa eat soms of the delicious Juice of the corn. Most of us are Ignorant outsiders In all these matters, ,and the same Is true with respeot to our Invest ments and speculations. . We do not get at the first movlngs of the chem istry In the money market or the first machinations of the outsiders In a scheme for putting up the' price -of a stofk. ' Ona Is a bit surprised today, how ever, to hear that an eminent Ameri can, who Is presumed to have been on the Inside of everything big In a certain Industry, finding sxpression In the stock market. Is overbought and In a dangerous position. The Informants actually give his name. From a knowledge ot his history and his ability -toraHy capital to - his support one may predlot that ths bears will not "get him" as It Is said thsy intend te do. His alleged predicament Is held by soms to ac count for tha recent weakness of the atnr.k merkt tn tkw -.-.. .... known facts to explain that without insisting on on nig numan sacrifice. Soms aowerful outsiders hsve been engaged latterly In an effort to pick the bones of big people who do things and they have met with con siderable success, i but ths earnings of the properties suggest that the bulk of-their work is done and that with many throes, the market will make Its way to bsttsr things toward the elose of the year or in the morn ing ot itii. c. b. The singular Indiffer ence of Liverpool as tn the purchase of their supplies Is quite a damper on bullish activity and some well posted people oouple this with the fear ot generally bad business conditions abroad. The crop estimate of a little above 10,000.000 bales by Southern Products company caused some selling but the general atmosphere was pessimistic owing to the security markets. No one seems bold enough yet to advise short sales but the general situation at the moment seems so clouded thst ths market may have to digest more liquidation before the fundamental oondltion again asserts their bullish ness.
