13 GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29. 1922 i -;s PRICES OF STOCKS TAKE Gains In Active Shares Rang ; lug From 1 to 7 Points " Are Recorded. BEAR OPERATORS ON JOB , New York. Nov. IS. Stock prices took decided turn for the better In today'! dealings, gains In active shares ranging from one to nearly seven points. Much of the Impetus for the rise Has furnished by bear operators, who wished to remain covered over the ollday, and by the renewed activity of pools which had ceased to func stlin during the reaction which had spread over the better part of five weeks. The rapidity of ths advance Indicated that the decline In some quarters had been overtoil. The higher prices attracted some outside buying, but It has not yet reached sufficient proportions to materially Influence prices. Lower money rates, another new hlfh for sterling exchange, a num ber of dividend resumptions and in creases and the publication of more favorable October railroad earnings reports all helped to create a better atmosphere but It aould hardly be aald that the upward course of prices was governed by any or all of these. With professional speculators in con trol, prices of late have moved in earning disregard of outaide newa developments. Standard Oil shares took a promi nent -part in the advance. New Jer sey gaining; seven points and Cali fornia 1. The strength of California Petroleum, which waa pushed up i points, was founded on unconfirmed . raraors of Ita being placed on a divi dend basis next month and reports of its possible absorption by Standard Oil of California. The usual "sell ing on the good news" caused a slight loos in Americsn Can which an nounced an initial dividend of SI. 25 on the common, while Adams Express ' broke more than five points on an nouncement of a resumption of dlvi- ' denda, reflecting speculative disap . aointment at the 14 annual rate. The cotton market showed a steadier tone to day owing to reports of Improving trado In Lancaahlre and rather more bullish advices from ths southern spot markets. A reiteration of amal crop figures may also have contrib uted to the advance wiik-h oarrled January contracts ua to 26.J7 or IB point not higher and 67 points above tne low levtl touched on tliv break yrsurday. A local report estimating the crop at 1.911.000 bales or slightly above recent ouinsn views was witnout any apparent Influence on the early mar ket and while the circulation of a few additional December notlcea brought out aome scattering liquida tion there appeared to be a sufficient demand to absorb It at 6 to 10 points under the price of January. At any rats the market soon turned upward witn ouyers nnoing encouragement In the reported better tone of the stock market and reports of a bet ter spot demand In the south. De cember advanced from 15,00 to 25.il and March from 15.0 to 15.43 with the active rnonths shoa'tng net ad varices of 13 to IS points during the middle of the afternoon. The early afternoon advance was probably pro moted by reports that a prominent southern organisation estimated the yield at 9,(16.000 bales, but general business was comparatively quiet during the entire day.
