For the preeent year, the depart ment had an appropriation of 136, H6l.il. from etate and federal funda Next year, It was itated, at least J44.O0O will be requested. There are 1 white schools In the slate with home eoonomlo courses at present In comparison with it In 1921. This year, there are 10 negro schools with the oeuree, as compared with six the previous year.' - ' In stressing the Importance of every high school girl being Inter ested In home economics, Miss Moran pointed out that there now are ap proximately 1,000 students taking ihe course. Through the decision ta piece the study In the flrst two years f high school, the authorities ex peot to "make It practical and help ful In the lives of the girl students. 1 "Th ua of a state course of VHclr," slid Miss Moran, has done f much toward the standardization of ' the work . all over the state. The suggested course, issued In tempora ry form, was used In all the vocation nl schools and quite generally In the nther Institutions. A year's trial lias .proven the necessity of such a course. The work Is planned for the eighth una ninth grades and Is paralleled In the elgth by general science and In the ninth by, biology. Next year, we are planning further Improvements In this direction. The division of vocational education has Issued a list of equipment required In all state-paid schools. This list Includes a minimum and a standard requirement. Many schools have meaaured up to this. A prescribed reersnce library to be kept in the home economics department Is a part of the requirement. "In addition to their class room work, many of the teachers have conducted evening classes in home economics "for the women of various communities. There were approxi mately 600 women enrolled in these classes during the year. It Is planned to Increaee these classes. "Two-thirds of our teachers are of the A grads rating, and we want to better this average. , In asking tor a larger appropriation, we have lt view the acceptance of more schools for the horns economics work. We believe that the demand for the course during the year will show the Importance of an Increase in funds," she said. Miss Moran stated a large number of conferences had been held during recent months In relation to the work of her department and all of ficials In the schools were co-operating for the extension of the depart ment's program.
