6 GREENSBORO DAILY NEWS, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1922 VERY IRKED ADVANCE Stock Market Movements Con fusing With Professionals In Complete Control. RAILROAD STOCKS GAIN ' New York, Dec. 20 The confin ing movement of prices In todsy'B stock market reflected the specula tive uncertainty over the ultimate . trend, trading again being largely a professional affair. Speculators for the advance took the railroad shares In hand shortly after the opening and appeared 10 b making goo progress when short pressure ias ss reeled against some of the steels, equipments and other speculative fa vorite, ihe market thereafter ex hibiting marked irregularity. Conspicuous strength was shown durlnii the session by California Petroleum, which made an extreme gain of more than eight points, on publication of NovemDcr proaueuvn ,,.,-.. ahnwlnir that California wells turned out a record output of 14 035.637 barrels. Tan-American a ml H showed net advances of 1 is and aeven-elghths respectively, and Standard Oil of catuornia gamru two points. Mexican Petroleum climbed aeven point to 2S8, another new high record. Steel aharea failed to respond to the optimistic tone of the weekly trad reviewa, which Indicated un usual year-end activity with pros pects for a continuance of a high production rate Into the early months of neat year. Vnited States Steel got down below lot for a net loss of fire-eighths, Mldvale dropped seven eighths and Republic one. Bethle hem B vlelded two points and came within five points of the year's low. selling of this Issue being Influenced by the publication of unofficial re ports allowing that the earnings this year will not cover any rart of the common dividends. Crucible dropped 1. Baldwin, which led ths advance yesterday with net gain of more than four points, forfeited 2 points today. Other equipments also were under pressure, losses of one to throe points being recorded by Pullmsn, American Locomotive and Genera Electric, Railroad stocks generally failed to hold their early gains although Le high Valley, Canadian Pacific Illi nois Central, and Delaware and Hud son, closed one to two points higher. Ten shares of Michigan Central changed hands at 110. up 40 from tha previous sale. Reading was up v oyer a point at one time but closed r at a slight fractional loss. Copper shsres made no response t to another Increase In the price of the red metal, bringing It to 14 cents a pound, the recent strength of ' these issues apparently having dls , counted this action. Anaconda, Ken t necott. Inspiration, Cerro de Paaco and Chile all showed small fractional losses, directors of the last named meeting today but taking no divl- . dend action. Speculative belief that the dlrec- tors of the International Mercantile Marine company will either omit or , delay action on the preferred dlvl- dend at tomorrow's meeting was re i fleeted In a 2 point drop In that stock. Some of the other noticeably weak spots were Allied Chemical. ! Brooklvn Edison. National l-esd. ' Vnited Fruit and Standard Oil of New i Jersey, old stock off three to H t points, and Porto Rlcan Tobacco oft J seven points. t Call nwney opened at 414, eased J off to 4 and thence to four, where It closed. Time money continued to t tie quoted at- 4 bid and five per cent offered, some SS and 90-day loans being made at 4 per cent. I I Commercial paper trading contlnuea inlet with little new paper coming i into the aiarket. f Foreign exchanges were weak at the opening of business but recov- t rretl somewhat later. Demand ster- ; ling was. quoted around 14.62 andi 4 French francs at 1. 42. tionana ana t ltenmark remittances dropped about 22 points each. Sliver exchanges showed a firmer tone. The Canadian dollar was at a discount of seven J eighths of one per cent. I Day's total sales, 856.000 shsres. Twenty industrials averaged 97.31 A); net loss. .!; high 1922. 101.43: low 7S.6S. COTTON OPENS HIGH AND LATER DECLINES Not Laws of 11 lo 19 Points Shown During tha Day at Now Orleans. salea, 26.44; New Orleans, La.. Dec. 20. After a fairly strong opening cotton turned easy today under - liquidating sales from tbs long side and prices under- won, a prolonged sag during ths re malnder of the session. From ad vances above yesterday's close of 1 to is points there was a fall to de clines of to to 27 points under. Jan uary traded up to 26.11 and fell back to 25.48. The close waa at net de clines on the day of 11 to 19 points, with January at 26.67. While the higher opening was mainiy causea Dy tne census bureau figures on ginning. 9.491,296 bales produced to December 12, the belter Liverpool market than due was a considerable support, all the more so because private cablegrams from the English market claimed that Man cheater was doing a Urge trsde. nome ouying also was caused by tele grama from the Atlantlcs to local brokerage concerns to the effect that the mllla there were booking large orders especially for heavy cloths at top prices. The ginning figures Just about met bullish expectations and wsre roiiowed ty claims that the government in lis recent figures on the yield of 9.9S4.000 hales of SOO pounds hsd overestimated the crop. Liquidation by longs began soon arter the opening and waa a factor in the trading thereafter. Much of It appeared to be of the character usually seen at this Urns of the year Just before the holidays, but in the anernoon some of the selling was Inaptred by unfavorable opinion of the attitude of Turkey. Wheat: An enoririous trade followed an opening bulge to new high levels for the season on strength at Liverpool and In Argentine and relative firmness at Winnipeg. Kastrrn houses were enormous sellers, running Ihe market into general commission house and professional selling and stop loss or aers with no apparent news to ac count for the pressure, except a dis position to take profits for holidays. At first It was felt that a prominent stock operator was selling out his long line but later In the day the gossip was that the selling had been done by a prominent western trader who waa In New York and who has been bearish for some lime. Com: The market opened stronger with wheat, but suddenly met general commission house selling and profit taking uncovering atop loss orders and bringing about a heavy tone the balance of the session. Support was ln,vldr"' on a scale down, but selling was so large that it did not appear to have been digested up to the close. FENNER ft BEANR. HAITIMOIK, HAT AND GRAIN. (Sy Uaatd wire l Dill, Nnn.)
