AFFAIRS ABOUT PETERSBURG THE NEWS. We have but little to say of affairs about Peters wrg for the last forty i-ht hours. On Saturday tat few shells were thrown into the city in the day tJiae, and they did scarcely any injury to property, fcid none to life or. limb. About 11 o'clock on Sat urday night a.severe shelling commenced and was fcept up for seme time without inflicting any injury. Yesterday passed off in almost unbroken quietjnot dozen shells having visited us up to 7 p. in. The news from our Northern operations is contra dictory. One report is that our army had recrossed the Potomac bringing off safely all our spoils, while mother report is current thafehe had gone to Freds rickio meet Hunter. We may get something more definite at a later hour. .The news from Northern Mississippi, as given by :he telegraph is, cheering, and will mitigate the ap prehensions about affairs in Northern Georgia. For rest, the croakers to the contrary notwithstanding, is where he ought to ba, and we have an abiding faith that Gen. Johnston will give a good account of Sherman in spite c.f their criticisms of those who are -it ia hundreds of yards of miles of the sceneol ac 1190. ' " V.: " 9 P.M. . We have waited until this moment to sift the truth :f possible, of one or two rumors which have been current here to-day. One of these rumors was that battery cf ours not far below City Point, on the orth side of James river had fired into and sunk Yankee transports heavily lden with troops, and caused five others to take theiack track serious 7 crippled. This report has "come up straight," M we believe it to be true. Another rumor was' current which must be taken lts par value, or at whatever discount the reader t leases. It was to the effect that Gen.. Grant was amed by a shell on Friday. The story gxJfes that on t day he had ascended an eminence therefore Vm t0 wtness the shelling of Petersburg, and that hile (ngas;ed in that pleasant and human occupa 0n shell, or a fragment of a shell terminated his orul existence, and that this Wag done by an un xPected battery planted by as just in time to kill uh.
