From this servi '.tude, the Circassians released themselves in the 16th century, by the aid of Ivan I., of Russia, who had married a Circassian princess. At a later period, the Circassians acknowledged the Sultan as head'of tbeir faith, but do not appear to have been political ly subject to Turkey except aa an ally in making forays on the Russian frontier. When Russia ex torted the treaty of Adrianople from tbe Turks (1S20) tbe Sultan ceded CircassU to Russia, but the Cirs cassians refused to recognize the cession. Tneir re sistance to the Rnssian claim, of sovereignty is the cause of the war which has recently terminated in the capitulation of Vardar, the last of the Circas sian strongholds, and the consequent submission of all the tribes. A Circassian deputation arnved-in Constantinople in 1856, and presented to the'Otto man Port. an address from the Circassianxftiefo, pro testing against the invasion of the accursed Musco ' vite " and asking ' to" be placed forever undr the majestic shadow of the imperial throne of the Sul- tan;" The sick man " could hot render any assis- tance and at last the valiant people who for so long a period resolutely- maintained an unequal struggle with the whole force of the Russian .Empire have been compelled to saccomb to the accursed Musco vite," three hundred thousand "immigrants" men, women and children were, a short time since, hov ering on the Circassian coast of the Euxine and catchrh" at every opportunity to reach Trebizond. 'X'hey seemed to prefer any miseries to remaining under the sway of their Muscovite conquerors. They were congregated in places on the seaboard, wbere there was no provision whatever for their shelter or substance. Every litHe coasting vessel WAS SGlZtCl U pull co a uicano jl cviiijf ouvv iv aaw- tiiond, and those who survived the sea passage were exposed to the perils of disease and famine at Trebi bond, where the small pox and typhus fever were raging among the immigrants and native population alike. ,, ' " The Turkish Government has made energetic ef forts to relieve the sufferings of the Carcassians. The expense involved in the measures adopted is estimated.at not less than one million pounds ster ling The management of the Circassians will b2 arenornifius expense to the Turks, and they de serve credit far taking it up at once so heartily. The Sultan himself contributed 50,000 fiom his :-privy purse. It is asserted that the Russians have done everys thing they'could to conciliate these tribes. But we knovv the" worth and meaning of these expressions by the example of Poland; and it is no wonder if it js generally believed that the Russians have in effect 4riven the people away with the hope of colonizing the place with the Cossack" element. Whatever be the truth, it is a cruel story of a simple and brave nation driven out of their homes to make room for the merciless advance of a military organization. perhaps it was impassible for a small and fanatical Mahomedan tribe to maintain themselves, even in mountain fastnesses, against a vast Empire as fa natical as themselves for another religion.
