New ^ork (Associated Negro
Press) — Niue cLimpionship will
be the feature of the ninth an
niiul contract bridge chatnpiou-
ahips of the Ainericau Bridge
association to be held thix year
in Detroit from August 17 to 23.
Executive secretary Arth.ir Rv
Curieli in making the announce
ment this week, s{x>kc with high
praise of this year’s hosts, the
the Gogginettes club, who rej>ort
everything will be in readiness
for what is expected to be the
best tournament of the associa
tion’s history.
Of outstanding importance and
calculated to be a big attraction
is the novic« open pair champion
ship, sponsored this year for the
first time for the benefit of
bi-idge players who do not feel
themselves sulfieiently capable of
competing against the more ex
pert players. The “Qogginette
Trophy for Novice Open Pairs”
will be awarded to the winner in
the form of a replica.
The cream of the ierop, how
ever, will be locked in competi
tion for the masters individual
championship. Only top ranking
players according to total master
point holding are eligible for this
event. Dr. A. M. Curtis of Pater
son, New Jersey is last year’s
winner and will be entered ligain
IS oased upen
central location of the host city
and reports of probable attend
ance from areas not heretofore
reptesented in ttie nationals such
as New Orleans, St. Ijouis, Mont
gomery and Los Angeles. The
1940 winner in the ojien pair
were Misn Haxel Facoy and L. A.
Fields, of New York City.
Considered one of the favorite
events is the mixtnl pair cham
pionships. In previous year*, t^is
as been a strong puller of en-
tries. The current champion'* arc
Mrs. Cassie Davis and G. F.
Benoit of New York City.
Of coarse, tremendous interest
will probably be shown by the
weaker sex for the women's i>air
championships, won in l'J40 by
Mrs. Rosanna John% and Mrs-
Bloise Morris of''New York. Be
cause of the large female *n>««her
sship of the Oogginetl^Aesides
event is destined to dra^ a
|heir role as reoejHionists, this
siderable local turn out.

Good news was received on N. C. Campus last week whetl word came the Downing
(right) and Colbert stars on last season’s baske tball championship team of the CIAA would pos
sibly return for school next year. Downing wh o stands six feet eleveiyi»ches in his socks, was
too tall for Untie Sam’s army and Colbert is in a deferred class. It's just sad new^ for other
teams throughout the CIAA circuit since both men are considered tops in their field of sports.
