CIAA Tournament May Have Five Carolina Teams; Morgan, Union, Virginia State Best Of Outsiders .Unofficial CIAA team stand ings early this week pointed to the possibility of five North Carolina basketball teams parti cipating in the 12th annual con ference cage tourney in Dur ham February 28, March 1 and 2. On a won-loss basis, Northi Carolina A and T, downed oi^ Saturday night by runner-up NCC of the previous week, led the pack with a 14'-2 count. The Eagles trailed with 12-3. Possible North Carolina quints in the Durham extravaganza in clude A and T, NCC, Winston- Salem, St. Augustine’s and Fay etteville. Fayetteville, coached by Wil liam ‘'Gus” Gaines made a strong bid during 1956, but 1957 may be the Broncos’ year. Prior to a release of official standings by CIAA Statistician L. T. Walker, these are the won- loss figures reported to the 12th CIAA Tournament Committee at its meeting in Durham last Sunday: A and T, 14-2; NCC, 12-3; Virginia Union, 10-3; Winston-Salem, 10-3; Virginia State, 12-5; St. Augustine’s 0-5; Fayetteville, 10-4; Morgan, 6-8; Howard, 6-7; Delaware, 9-5; Bluefield, 5-7; Shaw, 4-10; Maryland, 5-7; Hampton, 4-11; St. Paul’s 1-11; J. C. the Central State Marauders knocked the favored Jackson State squad out of the running and lost to Tennessee State in the finals. Based on regular season play, It appaara that whoever takes rtlM tusiwit thla year will have to reckon with Tennessee State or Jackson State. The final regular season contest between these two packed the “Little Garden” and should these two meet again it may be difficult to get close to the fabulous Heajth, Physical Education and Recreation Bull ding. The last three games between Coach Johnny McLendon’s point makers and Coach Harri son B. Wilson’s top ranked de fensive machine have gone into overtime. There is no doubt that a meeting between them would be the answer to the Tourna ment Committee’s prayers from a financial point of vi^ at least. But anything can happen and often does, so it cotil4 be Coach Dwight Reed’s Lincoln Univer sity quintet getting into the fi nals or Coach J. B. Brown’s freshman loaded squad coming through where it really counts, not to mention the possibility ol! Grambling College under Coach Fred Hobdy upsetting the dope bucket.
