Hears Franklin
TUSKECrEE, Al«. — Dr. John
H 'pc Franklin, Chsirman of the
Department of History, Brooklyn
College, will deliver the Founder's
Day Address at Tuskegee Institute,
Sunday, March 22.
This is one of the Institute’s
major annual events which follows
the Spring Meeting of the Board
of Trustees convening uu
day, March' 21.
Dr. Franklin has taught at Fisk
University, St. Augustine’s College,
and North Carolina College st
Durham. In 1947 he bccame pro
fessor of history, Howard Universi
ty, a position from which he re
signed in 1856 to become profess
or and visiting profes.sor in sev
eral American universities, includ
ing Harvard University, the Uni
versity of Wisconsin, Cornell tJni-
versity and the University of
California at Berkeley.

lege students were urged to pre
pare to live “danjgerous and full
lives” rather than “placid and safe
lives” by Mrs. William T. Mason,
of Norfolk, Va., in her address be
fore the third session of the 33rd
annual Homemaking Institv.te, here
Wednesday.
Mrs. Mason, a public reIatio|is
consultant, and former president,of
the Natiotial Council of Negro Wo
men, in listing the types of per
sons to l)e found in a community,
also referred to the “charming
wastrels" and the “just plain
wastrels.”
“The charming wastrels,” she
said, “are those egocentrics wrap
ped up In their bridge and poker
gmes and their fine homes and
reers and marriage can be mixA

Mrs. Mason reminded the stu
dents that they are merely serving
an apprenticeship in preparation
for'“a great performance in your
local communities.” She urged
them to develop a sound philo.nophy
which will give meaning to their
lives.

Mensah, of Ibadan, Nigeria,, who
told of the increasing le.'idership
roles being played by African wo
men generally and by Nigerian wo
men in particular.
