The National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peo ple has filed complaints with the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, al leging that se\;en major indus tries and two labor unions are guilty of racial discrimination against Negroes. Herbert Hill. NAACP direc tor for labor program, filed the complaints here recently with EEOC Commissioner Samuel Jackson, under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Riehts Act which prohibits discrimination in em ployment on the basis of race or color, including but not limited to promotional on-the job training opportunities. The complaints specifically charged that more than 50 plaintiffs had been denied their rights under Title Vn by the following corporations- Bethlehem Steel Corp.. Spar rows Point, Maryland; Burling ton Industries, Inc., Davidson Transfer and Storage Co.. Baltimore, Maryland; Gen eral Instrument Corp., Darling ton, S. C.; Republic Steel Corp., Gadsden. Ala,: Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Gadsden, Ala. and I. D. Precision Corp., Gads den. Ala. The unions hit by charges of racial bias included Local 2176, United Steelworkers of Ameri ca, AFL-CIO, Gadsden, Ala., and Local 190, Cement Masons Union, Everett, Washington. The NAACP, which is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization, had pre viously filed some 1600 com plaints alleging racial discrimi nation, since July 2, 1965, when Title VII of the Civil Rights Act went into effect. MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE GETS $42,375 GRANT FOR HEALTH CENTER WASHINGTON, D. C. Me harry Medical College will re ceive a grant of $42,379 to complete the planning for (1) a comprehensive neighborhood health center in an urban area of disadvantaged people in Nashville, Tennessee, and (2) methods of integrating health programs into the teaching ac tivities of Meharry Medical College, Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. The initial plan ning grant of $54,081 terminat ed on February 28, 1967. The present grant will run through May 31, 1967.
