While this question Is diffi cult to answer with any degree of accuracy you might use these figures as guidelines: using 8-8-8 as a basis, add one level teaspoonful to a 6-inch pot, one level tablespoonful to an 8-inch pot, and about one third teaspoonful to a 4 inch pot. The granular form of fer tilizer is best. If you have the pellet form, crush with a ham mer before applying. For spe cial formulations (tablets, li quid or powder) carefully fol low the manufacturers' recom mendations. How can I tell whether or not my house plants need to be repotted in a larger contain er? Place the fingers of one hand firmly on top of the soil in the pot. With the other hand, turn the pot upside down. Tap the rim of the pot gently un til the ball slips out. If the roots have formed a thick solid mass on the outside of the ball of soil, the plant should be repotted. While we are on the subject of house plants, I remind you again that over-watering is the most common cause of failure of potted house plants to grow well. We hear much about the im portance of light in growing house plants and how the light supply varies in different horn- «. Is a sun lamp of any value in supplying the plant needs for light? The sui. lamp is designed to Garden Times tan your hide and not your flowers, as it produces a high percentage of ull r a-violet (short wave) light. It is best to use ordinary incandescent bulbs if you need additional light. How do plants climb? Some of the more common methods are these: bittersweet, clema- tis andgrape have clinging ten drils, honeysuckle and wisteria are twining; Boston ivy and Virginia creeper have adhesive discs; and euonymus, trumpet creeper and Baltic ivy employ root-like holdfasts. C.—How ard University President James Madison Nabrit, Jr. this week announced his pending retire ment as head of the nation's largest predominantly Negro institution of higher learning. The retirement will become effective as soon as a successor has been named to replace him, | Dr. Nabrit said. The Atlanta-born educator SATURDAY, JULY 22, 1967 THE CAROLINA TIMES— and constitutional lawyer has served as president of Howard since July 1, 1960. He joined the faculty of the Howard School of Law in 1936. In announcing his retire ment, the 66-year old presi dent said that he was exercis ing his option of retirement after reaching the age of 65. At Howard retirement is per mitted at 65 and mandatory at 68. Dr. Nabrit, who leaves on a month-long tour of seven South American countries later this week, said he will spend his future years traveling and writing. The president stated em- phatically that the unrest that has plagued the University's campus during the past year did not influence his decision ■to retire at this time. "I have always felt that I should retire before it became mandatory," he said. "I have wanted to travel and to write, and I would like to begin tjiis new phase of my career at an age and in a state of health that will permit me to do it."
