VAUGHN JACKSON, Miss. The director of the Mississip pi Council on Human Rela tions has charged that the election of Rep. John Bell Williams as Mississippi's next governor had encourag ed racial extremists and that one of Williams' staff mem bers was involved with "vio lent-prone" organizations. Kenneth L. Dean's charges followed a seris of trrorist bombings in recent we cks. He ?aid' the governor-elect must take some of the blame for the terrorism becai' e a member of his staff had been connected with anti-N eg ro, •nti-Semitic groups. DEAN DID not ment ion any names, and a spokesman for Williams said, "we don't know who he is talking a bout." The spokesman said Willi ams, recuperating at a hos pital from recent surgery, had made his position c 1 ear regarding the bombings in a •tatement issued last week. THE GOVERNOR-elect, in ■ strongly worded statement, said he had "nothing but con tempt for anyone who would engage directly or indirectly In these senseless and despio able atrocities. I have the same cntempt for any one who would willingly encour age or condone such violent crimes." Dean said a member of Williams' staff was prsent at a recent meeting of th e Americans for the Preserva tion of the White Race R. He said a member of the Jackson Gity Commission al so attended the meet'ng. DEAN ACCUSED the AP WR of handinn out a publica tion at the state fair in Jack son this fall containing in structions on how to con struct various kinds of bombs. The APWR earlier denied aything to do with the re cent bombings and suggest ed the violence miply be, work of leftwing groups. Dean did not acCuSfe the APWR of the bombings, but said there were "a number of individuals in our sta t e who do not take out mem bership in racist organiza tions, but who move among encourag in g acts of vio lence." "THIS KIND OF situation allows a number of these or ganizations to involve th e m selves in a supportive way in acts of violence having to do with race and anti-Semitism without actually being form ally involved as an organiza tion," said Dean. "A classic example of this kind of organization is APW- R.' He added the citizens coun cil and the Ku Klux K 1 a n "also are such organi za tions." Republican Governors Seek Unity PALM BEACH, Fla. Determined to gain a greater voice in national issues, the na tion's Republican governors convene Thursday at this sea shore resort in a pre-election year conference expected to em phasize development of grass roots unity and 1968 platform re commendations. Twenty-four GOP governors are scheduled to attend with George Romney of Michigan the most notable absentee. Unable to agree on any partic ular presidential candidate next year, the governors are expect ed to endorse platform recom mendations expressing a gener ally moderate viewpoint. Gov. John Love of Colorado, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, said a report by New York Gov. Nel son A. Rockefeller probably will be used as the foundation for some specific later recommen dations to the convention plat form committee. Florida Gov. Claude Kirk, said to have national aspirations himself, host to the conference, has prepared a lively reception for his guests. State flags lined the Breakers Hotel Wednesday and Kirk's aides said the gover nors would be greeted by bauds and a limousine escort. Tom Ferguson, Kirk's top aide, said GOP party chairmen, invited for the first time are ex pected to turn out in force. "Particular stress will be placed on campaigning and techniques to get "Republican ism across in 1968," he said. Ferguson said the chairmen were invited because they are essential in grass-roots cam paigning. DECORATIVE CLOCK IS PRACTICAL GIFT 'S " \ ' 7 v >, > * A HI ■ L J ' - ; A.
