"TThe black church net work is a sleeping giant. And if awakened and coa lesced with white churches, will be the greatest social force in America," said Stokes. , Atlanta's Mayor Jackson made similar observations. "Christianity is not a side line religion," said Jackson. "You have got to be acti vists " The activism that Jack son, Stokes and other speakers Urged was in get ting church members regis tered to vote, informed on the issues, and voting at the polls. The white church has been more active in politics in America, said Jackson, noting that the "only peo ple who' set public policy are elected officials", "We have to change the people who set public policy if we don't like how we live." Jackson told of a white church in Richmond, Va., which endorsed candidates. Referring to politicing with Republicans as well as Democrats in the 1980 election, AME Bishop Frank Madison Reid observed that "blacks need to learn that the Democratic Party is not the party of Jesus Christ." He suggested that minis ters become involved in electoral politics along with getting tough on crime. The church should "deal with the disparity of" justice" be ween black and white and the rich and poor. Reid call ed for a coalition of white and black churchmen n the social issues. But Mayor Jackson in his address warned of the whites taking over the lead ership. "Our allies should be looked to for support, not leadership," said Jackson. Can a network of black churchmen be effective in the 1980 election? Congressman Stokes said, "in light of the present state of black America, the black church is in a great position to give the kind of leadership exerted in the 1960's." , . Borders said "every thing we have was started in the black church." Until funds are secured, the organization's regional office will be located at Saint Joseph's AME Church where Rev. Easley is minis ter. Rev. John Gillison, pastor of the Mount Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, S.C, was elected to the co chairmanship. Officers for state-wide PIE are yet to be chosen.
